With family members at her bedside, a precious soul, Mrs. Jo Huddleston, transitioned to her heavenly reward at 9:43 p.m. Thursday evening May 14, 2026 at the age of 86 at her Cumberland Drive home, which she loved dearly. She was pronounced deceased by Gentiva Hospice of Livingston who had been assisting the family with her care in her final days.

Her pastor, Eld. Scott Rigsby, will officiate at the 11 a.m. funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial will follow beside her deceased husband, Fred William Sloan who died at the age of 63 on November 1, 1997., in the Pleasant Shade Cemetery.

The Huddleston family will receive friends on Sunday May 17th from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.at Sanderson in Carthage and again on Monday from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. services.

She was born Jo Helen Caruthers in the Whitleyville Community of Jackson County on January 28, 1940 and was the second born of seven children, six daughters and a son, of the late Dillard Caruthers who died at the age of 80 on December 17, 1992 and Effie Mae Spivey Caruthers who died at the age of 84 on January 29, 2003.

Her eldest and first-born sister, Bertie Frances Caruthers Dickerson died at the age of 84 on August 8, 2022. Also preceding her in death were another sister, Betty Gail Caruthers Hudson who died February 1, 2016 at the age of 57 and a brother, Jerry Wayne Caruthers who died July 11, 1987 at the age of 40.

On December 10, 1999, she was united in marriage to Elmwood Community native and highly decorated Vietnam Veteran, Billy Frank (Bill) Huddleston. He preceded her in death on November 8, 2017 at the age of 77 following only eighteen years of a happy and dedicated marriage.

For eighteen years Mrs. Huddleston was employed by the Imperial Reading Corporation in Lafayette and for eighteen years before her 2001 retirement she was a nurse tech at the former Smith County Health Care Center in Carthage.

Mrs. Huddleston was a devoted and supportive member of the Pleasant Shade Upper Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her four children, Jouwonia Smith and husband Ricky of the Willette Community, Marty Smith and wife Linda of Murfreesboro, Ronnie Smith and wife Betty of Fountain Run, Kentucky Jasmine Shore and husband T. J. of Newbern, Tennessee, step-daughter, Lisa Johnson of Gallatin; three surviving sisters, Nannie Caruthers Newberry, Janice Caruthers Short and husband Wally all of the Hermitage Springs Community, Charlotte Caruthers Cherry and husband Ricky of Lafayette; eight grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

The Huddleston family requests memorials to the Pleasant Shade Cemetery Mowing Fund.
