USA Swimming has announced the National Center for Safety Initiatives (NCSI) as its new authorized provider for all background screenings.
NCSI provides services to the US Olympic and Paralympic Committees, as well as 60 other domestic governing bodies within the sport.
As stated on the USA Swimming website, the price of background screenings will increase, but several aspects of the process will also improve.
Those include (as per the USA Swimming website):
More reliable turnaround times Improved processing for international searches State Level Office of Court Administration searches included in the cost, eliminating additional fees Stronger compliance support to help navigate complex state requirements Hands on customer service from a dedicated support team Self-service applicant portal where members can track the status of their screening and communicate directly with support.The background check will cost $30, and the fee to renew it (every other year) is also $30.
The following individuals must complete a background screening:
All USA Swimming non-athlete members subject to the exclusion below.* All adult National Team and National Junior Team athletes. All adult athletes selected to participate on a national or international team, or an event to which the USOPC sends athletes. All adult athletes training at the Olympic and Paralympic Training Center.*The criminal background check requirement is waived for Junior Coaches and Junior Officials.
If your current background check does not expire until a later date, you do not need to complete a new background check until the expiration date listed on your USA Swimming member profile.
USA Swimming implemented a criminal background screening program in 2006, making it one of the first NGOs to require such screening. Since its implementation, criminal background checks have been a regular occurrence in youth sports, working to improve the safety and security of youth sports members by requiring coaches, officials, and other members who have direct interaction with youth members to complete background checks.
