Report: UNC Men’s Basketball Hiring Former Tar Heel Brandon Robinson as Assistant Coach ...Middle East

News by : (chapelboro) -

According to a report from Inside Carolina, former UNC men’s basketball player Brandon Robinson is set to join head coach Michael Malone’s staff in Chapel Hill for the upcoming season. Robinson will occupy the fifth and final assistant coaching spot, rounding out Malone’s bench.

Robinson played four years in Chapel Hill and was a freshman on UNC’s 2016-17 national championship team. He played in 130 total games during his time as a Tar Heel and eventually became a starter as a senior during the 2019-20 season. That year, Robinson battled through injuries but still started 23 games and averaged 30.2 minutes per game. Robinson set career highs in scoring (11.8 points per game), rebounding (3.2 per game), assists (2.4 per game), and free throw percentage (82.6 percent). Across his four-year career, Robinson averaged an excellent 37.3 percent on three-point shooting, including shooting 46.0 percent from downtown as a junior.

Robinson maintained an active presence in Chapel Hill after his playing career ended. He served as a graduate assistant on head coach Hubert Davis’ staff between May of 2021 and September of 2022 before entering into the professional realm. Robinson joined the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets as an assistant video coordinator in 2022 before joining the Utah Jazz in a similar role the next year. Since July of 2025, Robinson has been an assistant coach for the Jazz’s G-League affiliate, the Salt Lake City Stars.

Robinson will be the third former player to occupy a seat on Michael Malone’s bench. He joins Sean May and Pat Sullivan, who were holdovers from Davis’ staff. Bryan Tibaldi, who was reportedly hired earlier in the week, joins the staff from Providence, while former Arkansas assistant Chuck Martin is poised to be Malone’s associate head coach. Another former Tar Heel player, Deon Thompson, will reportedly be a graduate assistant as he pursues his master’s degree at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School.
