Ian Turner, the former head coach of British Swimming (now Aquatics GB), died in early May from unknown causes, leaving behind an enduring legacy in the swimming world.
An integral component of Great Britain’s swimming community, Turner was at the helm of British Swimming from 1999 to 2008. Over the course of his coaching career, he guided 25 swimmers to qualify for seven Olympic Games, and his athletes brought home a collective 127 medals across multiple Olympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games and European Championships.

Before taking on the role of Great Britain’s head swimming coach, Turner gained renown by coaching Olympic medalist Paul Palmer at the City of Lincoln Pentaqua Swimming Club. Under Turner’s leadership, Palmer qualified for the 1992 Barcelona Games in the men’s 200, 400 and 1500 free and went on to finish 9th in the 200 free. Four years later and still coached by Turner, Palmer brought home a silver medal in the 400 free from the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
In addition to Palmer, Turner coached a number of other successful British swimmers over the years, including the likes of Marc Spackman, Mel Marshall and Lizzie Simmonds.
Turner coached at the Lincoln Pentaqua Swimming Club until 1996, when he headed to Bath University and began developing a performance group which became the first High Performance Center for swimming in Great Britain. A few short years later, he was elevated to the position of head coach of British Swimming.
After leaving his post with British Swimming in 2008, Turner headed to New Zealand for a coaching position with North Shore Club in Auckland before taking up a role as Technical Director with the Singapore Swimming Association in 2012. He remained closely involved with swimming in Singapore for many years, as well as consulting on performance swimming around the world.
Former swimmer Spackman shared a tribute to Turner on his Instagram, reflecting on the impact that he had on Spackman’s life.
“Ian was far more than just a coach to me,” Spackman wrote. “He was my mentor, a guiding influence, and in many ways a second father. From the moment I joined City of Lincoln Pentaqua in 1983, through my years with Bath University and all the way to 2004, Ian was there helping shape not only my swimming career, but also the person I became… Some of my greatest memories in swimming, and many of the values I still carry today as a coach and person, came from the lessons Ian taught me on poolside and through life. His influence reached far beyond medals, times, or results. He cared deeply about people, about standards, about doing things the right way, and about giving everything to the team around him.”
Prior to becoming a professional swim coach, Turner worked as a schoolteacher for 23 years. He is survived by his family and his lasting impact on the worldwide swimming community.
