Another night of limited impact from the Cubs’ offense. It’s four games on the road against mostly good pitching so you still don’t want to start freaking, but that doesn’t make it particularly fun to watch.
You can’t say too much on the other side when the Cubs don’t score more than a run, but it was still unfortunate the way the Braves took the lead. It started with a rare mental mistake by Nico Hoerner on Michael Harris II’s grounder to open the 8th inning, on which he had plenty of time for a quick field and toss but instead tried for a glove flip (which he botched). A groundball hit and then a double to the wall (juuuust out of Seiya Suzuki’s reach), and the lead runner scored. A bummer, which was made all the worse by the subsequent two-run homer to really put things away. Not a good night for Phil Maton.
Great night for Shota Imanaga, though, in a losing effort. Sucks that it was wasted on a night with no offense, but I’m still giving him the Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game honors.
