Welp, it sounds like we aren’t getting a Bears-Seahawks Week 1 opener after all.
Despite the fact that it would make for must-see TV for all sorts of reasons, the powers that be who draw up the NFL’s schedule have decided against the Seattle Seahawks playing host to the Chicago Bears in Week 1. Instead, we are getting a Super Bowl rematch between the Seahawks and the New England Patriots.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz has the scoop:
Sources: The #Seahawks will open the 2026 season at home with a Super Bowl rematch against the #Patriots. So, the 2026 NFL season will begin with the two teams that ended last season. ?? pic.twitter.com/IdRS8MbEK1

Nothing is officially official yet. But I’m going to trust Schultz’s reporting on this one.
At face value, this is a pretty gutsy choice for the NFL to put the Seahawks and Patriots in Week 1. On the surface, you’d think this was an easy call to make. There might not be an easier way to get casuals to tune into the league’s 2026 season-opener than by cooking up a Super Bowl rematch. However, the Patriots have been navigating through controversial times throughout the offseason, most notably with Head Coach Mike Vrabel’s scandalous relationship with former league insider Dianna Russini.
Because of the situation, I did not think the NFL would want to put the Patriots in the spotlight early. I figured that the league and its broadcast partners would want to give it time, let it simmer down, and soft-launch New England’s first big primetime game a few weeks into the season. Instead, the NFL is ripping the band-aid off without thinking twice about it. Gutsy, to be sure. I’ll be curious to see how NBC and others who cover the league handle this one.
© Daniel Bartel-Imagn ImagesAs for the Bears, this news means that they will open their season on Sunday. With Sunday Night Football (Cowboys vs. Giants) and Monday Night Football (Chiefs vs. Broncos) already spoken for with announcements earlier in the week, there isn’t a night game for Chicago to be showcased in Week 1. This isn’t to say that this team still won’t be prominently featured in the early going.
The Seahawks-Patriots Week 1 game leaves the Bears on the outside looking in, but simultaneously opens the door for Chicago to play in the 3:25 p.m. CT prime afternoon window. Could we see a Bears-Packers Week 1 matchup? It is possible. We already know the Bears and Lions are squaring off on Thanksgiving. Does a Bears-Lions Week 1 game at Soldier Field make sense? In any case, I’m curious to see how the other dominoes fall here. Stay tuned.
