ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester intersection is getting a safety makeover this weekend using paint instead of speed bumps.

To nominate a dangerous intersection for a makeover scroll to the bottom

News10NBC Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean reports that artists will paint a giant mural on the intersection of Genesee Park Boulevard and Pioneer Street near the University of Rochester starting Saturday. The project will also temporarily narrow the street to slow traffic and make it safer for families trying to reach the park.

Create that visual…to slow down

“Well right now there are no cars so it should be pretty easy to cross the street right now,” said Jesse Knoth, president of the 19th Ward Association. He said as he crossed the boulevard. Most of the time, crossing is nearly impossible for parents with young children.

“Especially when they got little ones or strollers and little ones where you’re doing this thing,” Knoth said throwing out his arms in both directions.

The 19th Ward is west of the Genesee River near the University of Rochester. Saturday, the city will add temporary curbs to narrow the boulevard at this corner.

“To create that visual of hey, this isn’t a 40 foot wide crossing. I need to slow down a little bit,” Knoth said.

Artists will paint a street mural showing all four seasons.

“Spring, summer, winter and fall, all represented on the roadway,” said Lourdes Sharp with Reconnect Rochester, a group that works to make streets safer for drivers, walkers and cyclists.

Brean asked Sharp what painting art on the street has to do with safety.

“They call for people to take it a little slower and say oh what’s this in the road? What’s going on? And they take it a little slower,” Sharp said.

26 crashes in five years

Rochester police have been called to the intersection of Genesee Park Boulevard and Pioneer Street eight times in the last year for crashes. There have been 26 crashes in the last five years.

A similar project on the east side of the city shows the approach works. At Parsells Avenue and Greeley Street, the city added a crosswalk, bumped out the curb, added a speed bump and painted a mural at the intersection several years ago. Before that work, the average speed at the intersection was 39 mph. Now it’s 18 mph.

“Ever since they painted the street I think it’s been a protector for a lot of people,” said Catelyn Francis, who works at New City Cafe at the corner.

Once the road is painted and the curbs are bumped out on the boulevard, Reconnect Rochester will watch to see if traffic slows down and crashes decrease. If it works, they will ask the city to make the changes permanent.

Neighbors nominated the Genesee Park Boulevard intersection to Reconnect Rochester. The group then looked at the speed and crash data and decided this was the right location for the project. The painting starts Saturday at noon.

Reconnect Rochester is now accepting nominations for 2027 projects.
