Rochester Meals on Wheels volunteers push through rising gas prices to feed seniors ...Middle East

ROCHESTER – Gas prices are climbing, but volunteers with Meals on Wheels say it won’t stop them from delivering meals to those who need them.

About 90 routes are driven every day in Monroe County to deliver meals to people who depend on the service. Dave Wideman volunteers with Meals on Wheels to deliver meals every Monday and recently started volunteering twice a week.

“I don’t like the high gas prices,” Wideman said. “I mean, like anybody else, I just drive where I need to drive and then I just pay the money,” Wideman said.

He said he doesn’t factor in gas prices as much when he’s volunteering because of how it helps the community.

“I kind of like the practical implications,” Wideman said. “You’re delivering meals, people get a service out of it and it makes you feel good just to be part of that.”

The average price of fuel in Rochester was around $4.57 a gallon in Rochester on Wednesday, according to GasBuddy.

“I’ve never seen the price of gas rise so quickly as it has recently,” Wideman said. “So you just got to wonder how high could it go?”

One of his stops was to deliver a meal to Nancy Abate. Her son picks up most of what she needs each week, and Meals on Wheels volunteers help fill the gaps.

“They are all pleasant,” Abate said. “They don’t moan because I’m on the top floor. I moan about the top floor, you know, but I don’t have to do it very often.”

Wideman said it’s fulfilling for him to make deliveries and get to know people like Abate. Over the holidays, one of the people he delivers to gave him a gift.

“One woman gave me a little tin of cookies for Christmas,” he said. “So she really appreciates, I think, the delivery. I think they all appreciate it.”

Around 200 volunteers are helping Meals on Wheels every single day. Some of them are in the kitchen preparing meals and packing them. Around 85 volunteer drivers take these meals out to people in the community every day.

The director of Meals on Wheels said there is always a need for volunteers. The areas with the biggest need are Rochester, Brighton and Irondequoit.
