Blue Line Importance, Pridham’s Future, MSU Lands Top Draft Prospect, and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

Since we all want to see the Blackhawks playing beyond 84 games next year (reminder: that’s the length of the regular season moving forward), a good place to start would be how the current collection of players needs to elevate their play to get there. I’ve written about it and we’ve been discussing it since the end of the 2025-26 regular season.

But Scott Powers and Dom Luszczyszyn wrote a strong piece for The Athletic looking at what they have, what they still need, and discussed the potential for some of the current players to fill some of those outstanding needs. And it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the biggest area of focus for them is the blue line. The Blackhawks finished this past season with a very young group, and could start next year with the same 6-7 guys in the rotation. The entire group needs to take a big step in their development for the Blackhawks’ build to move forward into playoff contention.

Here’s part of what they wrote about the Blackhawks’ blue line group:

The Blackhawks lived and died with their young defense this season, perhaps suggesting that environment had a lot to do with those dire results. The Blackhawks did win games with Levshunov, 20, and Rinzel, 21, playing significant minutes, showing why the Blackhawks are so high on them. They also lost games because of them. Most teams don’t try to break in so many young defensemen at once. Young defensemen often develop in the shallow end and develop from there. The Blackhawks threw their best bets into the deep end, and asking them to sink or swim makes for a difficult place to excel. …

Blackhawks management is banking on those young defensemen to take another step and become the players they envisioned when drafted. How soon? That’s the unknown. And given the current level they’ve shown, the Blackhawks need them to take substantial steps to get the rebuild on track.

— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) May 12, 2026 Jack Pridham and the Kitchener Rangers won the Ross Robertson Cup as OHL champions last night. They closed out a sweep of Barrie with a 4-2 win. Pridham did not have a point in the series finale. He does have 17 points (two goals, 15 assists) in 18 postseason games, however.

— Ontario Hockey League (@OHLHockey) May 13, 2026 Pridham had a terrific season, and has the opportunity to potentially skate with 2026 top picks Tynan Lawrence and Caleb Malhotra at Boston University this fall. He’s an excellent all-around prospect who was among the OHL leaders in goals, power play goals and short-handed goals. Which makes me wonder if, given everything else the Blackhawks have in the pipeline, Pridham might be one of the “blue chip” prospects the Hawks are willing to include in a trade package if the right opportunity presents itself. There hasn’t been much talk about him signing; the college option gives both sides a cover there. But Pridham probably isn’t very far away from being pro-ready and the numbers game might make him a trade chip when Kyle Davidson’s phone rings. Corey Pronman dropped his looong rankings of 2026 NHL Draft prospects. And… he has defensemen in the top three spots! Chase Reid is his No. 1, followed by Alberts Šmits at 2 and Keaton Verhoeff at 3 before Gavin McKenna checks in at No. 4 overall. Hello!

— Corey Pronman (@coreypronman) May 13, 2026 Jeff Marek reported top 2026 NHL Draft prospect Ethan Belchetz has left the Windsor Spitfires and committed to Michigan State. The Spartans are going to be loaded this coming season — including Blackhawks prospect Mason West. The news of Belchetz going the college route was a huge surprise for everyone, including Windsor management. Pronman has Belchetz at No. 13 in his new rankings (above).

— Jim Parker (@winstarparker) May 12, 2026 The Rockford IceHogs signed defenseman Brayden Hislop to a one-year AHL contract for the 2026-27 season. The NHL’s Dept. of Player Safety had a busy Tuesday. First, they fined Colorado defenseman Josh Manson $5,000 for butt-ending Minnesota’s Michael McCarron. Then Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy found out he’ll start the 2026-27 season in the press box for six games for his malicious hack of Zach Benson.

— NHL Player Safety (@NHLPlayerSafety) May 12, 2026 Sidney Crosby, Porter Martone and Dawson Mercer have been added to Canada’s roster for the upcoming World Championship. Mathew Barzal will not play (pre-existing injury). The Carolina Hurricanes signed former Penn State forward Charlie Cerrato to a three-year, entry-level contract that is effective immediately and will keep him with the club through the 2027-28 season. The 21-year-old forward was a second-round pick (No. 49 overall) by Carolina in the 2025 NHL Draft. You can take one veteran center off the free agent board. Charlie Coyle signed a six-year deal with the Blue Jackets that has a $6M cap hit.
