A car crash in Myers Park in Charlotte took the life of recently graduated swimmer Keegan McKenney on Sunday; he was only 22 years old.
According to a report from local news outlet WSOC-TV, the accident was reported around 2:15 am on Sunday. Upon arrival on the scene, they found a BMW had gone off the road and struck a tree.
The report stated that everyone in the car was taken to local hospitals in McKenney early Sunday morning. They added that everyone in the vehicle was wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, and officials with the CMPD are still determining if impairment or speeding played a factor in the fatal crash.
According to the Charlotte Observer, there was also a 22-year-old woman and another man in the vehicle
The Queens University Charlotte team posted a tribute to McKenney on social media, calling him a “cherished teammate”.

McKenney recently wrapped up his collegiate career at the ASUN Championships in February, helping lead the team to a share of the 2026 ASUN Men’s team title and to a 2nd consecutive ASUN men’s team championship.
At those championships, McKenney qualified for finals in all three of his events, highlighted by a 5th-place finish in the 200 butterfly.
His club team, Bluefish Swim Club in Maine, also posted a tribute to McKenney, sharing their thoughts with his his family and friends after the tragic loss.

Keegan was part of the swim community and will be remembered by teammates, coaches, and everyone whose lives he touched. Sending love, prayers, and deepest condolences to his family and friends during this unimaginable time.
