ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Almost 4 million people hope to take to the skies over Memorial Day weekend, according to AAA.
Despite red-hot inflation, its not stopping people from going on a much-needed vacation. Americans are making leisure travel a priority.
Since the start of the war with Iran, the price of jet fuel has roughly doubled. Airlines have responded by hiking baggage fees by $10 and airfares by as much as 21%.
Kayak says it is still feasible for a family to fly to a vacation spot in this economy.
“Tampa, Orlando, Miami, Myrtle Beach, New York is up there on places where you can go and get away for under $350 this summer,” Kayla DeLoache of Kayak said.
Timing can make a big difference when booking travel.
“If you’re flexible, what we’re seeing at Kayak, is traveling middle to end of August can really save you some money,” DeLoache said.
That timing is perfect for families in our area because kids don’t return to school until after Labor Day. DeLoache said if you book now for a mid to late August vacation, you can save 9-42%.
“Flying midweek is a great option, as well as using our flex date calendar,” DeLoache said. “It’s a color-coded calendar view so you can see what date is cheaper to depart and return.”
Google Flights is also a great tool if your dates are flexible because it will tell you the best dates to fly for the cheapest price.
If you have the date but don’t know where you want to go, Skyscanner is a great tool that will tell you the cheapest places you can fly on that date. Expedia is great for packages if you’re looking for a flight and hotel bundle.
Kayak’s Explorer Tool is great for sticking to a budget.
“We will show you all of the places that you can fly to during that time frame within that budget,” DeLoache said.
Booking early is always best, but Hotel Tonight provides same-day hotel discounts for last-minute travelers whose schedules don’t allow advance planning.
