Michael Soroka continues Diamondbacks’ dominant pitching in win over Rangers ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

Michael Soroka blanked the Texas Rangers through 6.1 innings, and the Arizona Diamondbacks completed the shutout win, 1-0.

The Diamondbacks have won three straight games having scored eight total runs. They are back to .500 at 20-20.

Arizona has allowed 10 runs over its last seven games. The last time the D-backs had a seven-game stretch with that few runs allowed was back in 2011. Before then? 2001.

Soroka needed 23 pitches to get out of the first inning, but from there, he was efficient, missed bats with his slurve and avoided much hard contact. He allowed three hits and walked one batter.

The right-hander has allowed one run or fewer in three of his last four starts and two runs or fewer in six of his first eight games with Arizona. His season ERA dropped to 3.53.

The Diamondbacks have received six-plus innings from their starters in seven straight games, the club’s longest such streak since 2017. It is the longest active streak in the big leagues.

To take it a step further, the D-backs have worked four straight gems of six-plus innings with one or fewer runs and four or fewer hits allowed. The last time they did that was in 2019.

The starting rotation has been the best in baseball over the past eight days.

Soroka exited in the seventh inning at 89 pitches, and relievers Brandyn Garcia, Taylor Clarke and Paul Sewald took over from there.

Sewald had to face Corey Seager in the ninth inning at the same venue as their battle in Game 1 of the 2023 World Series. Sewald ended up hitting Seager with a pitch, and he stranded the runner on first.

The club has needed its pitching staff to be excellent to make up for the lack of offense.

Arizona scored in the first inning on Monday, as Geraldo Perdomo doubled home Corbin Carroll off pitcher Jakob Junis — who started after Nathan Eovaldi was scratched.

The lineup collected one hit from innings two through six, and the D-backs stranded the bases loaded with one out in the eighth inning.

Chasing pitches out of the zone, only two walks, lack of consistent hard contact, all of the Diamondbacks’ recent problems at the plate continued.

Perdomo and Nolan Arenado were the standouts with two hits each, while rookie Ryan Waldschmidt hit a ball 412 feet to the deepest part of the ballpark for a deep out.

That fly ball would have been a home run in 18 of 30 stadiums, according to Statcast (Chase Field not included).

Waldschmidt added a defensive highlight with a diving catch in center field.
