Rochester bicyclists ditch cars to save money as gas prices hit $4.49 a gallon in Monroe County ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — With gas prices continuing to rise, some people are looking at alternate ways to get around.

News10NBC spoke with a group of bicyclists about their plans to combat rising costs.

Right now, the average price of gas in Monroe County is about $4.49 a gallon according to AAA. That means to fill up a car with a gas tank capacity over 19 gallons costs more than $85.

That’s why some local bicyclists are turning their hobby into their commute. News10NBC spoke with a few riders from the Just for Giggles cycling group about how they’re adapting.

Rick Dalton from Just for Giggles has been riding bikes for 35 years. These days, he doesn’t even own a car.

“Well, I just don’t see the need to have a vehicle that you can do with just a bicycle. I do it for financial reasons. I do it for health reasons. Just a simpler life,” Dalton said. “Just seems to help your life.”

“A lot of people here in this group, a lot of them really commute most of the time, a lot of them don’t rely on vehicles,” Dalton added.

Levi Thomas-Thiemi works from home but if he could bike to work or the store every day, he would and encourages others to do the same.

“It’s expensive to fill up the tank. Luckily, it’s not too much of a detriment for me driving,” Thomas-Thiemi said. “But it’s still a big pain point.”

“I think it’d be a great way to stay active and get exercise. And also, you know, save money on transportation costs,” Thomas-Thiemi said.

Dalton said he would encourage anybody to try to use their bikes more often as their primary mode of transportation. He added that people can even invest in an e-bike, which would likely cost less money over the long run than a vehicle.

According to the governor’s office, more than 7,700 bike crashes happened in New York State in 2024. Forty-nine were deadly, which is why her office advises drivers and bicyclists to follow the rules of the road.

Anyone under the age of 14 is required to wear a helmet, and anyone over the age of 12 must ride in a bike lane or cycle track when available. Where there isn’t one, you must ride alongside the right-hand curb with the flow of traffic.

If you’re biking alongside someone in a road, you can ride side-by-side. But if a car tries to pass, then you must ride in a single-file line.
