Jacob Pins and Jan Schmidt will join the Utah men’s program for the upcoming 2026-2027 season. Pins arrives from Grand Canyon while Schmidt arrives from Division II UIndy.
Pins will make his return to the Big 12 after spending his freshman season with Arizona State in 2024-2025 before transferring to Grand Canyon for his sophomore year this past season. He will now transfer to join Utah. Pins was 2nd in the 1650 free in a 14:54.41 and 3rd in the 500 free back at the 2025 Big 12 Championships with a 4:17.22. This past season, Pins swam to a Big West title in the 1650 free with a 15:17.54 and a 4:21.08 for 2nd in the 500 free.
Based on his best times, Pins would have been 5th in the 500 free and 2nd in the 1650 free at Big 12s. Nicholas Chirafisi won conference titles in both events with a 4:13.48 500 free and a 14:52.65 1650 free. Chirafisi just finished his junior year so the two will have the chance to train together this fall.
Schmidt wrapped up his freshman season at the 2026 Division II NCAA Championships and was highlighted by a lifetime best and 8th place finish in the 1000 free with a 9:03.74. The 1000 free is not competed in at the Division I level except for dual meets. Schmidt’s best times sit at a 1:34.91 200 free and a 4:19.60 500 free. He did not swim the 1650 free this season and is originally from Germany. Based on his best times, Schmidt would have been 12th in the 200 free and 7th in the 500 free at 2026 Big 12s.
The Utah men finished 3rd out of seven teams at the 2026 Big 12 Championships. Nicholas Chirafisi led the way with 87.5 individual points. Both transfers add depth to the team’s already strong mid-distance/distance free group. Utah scored 114 points in the 500 free and 107 points in the 1650 free at 2026 Big 12s. They only event they scored more in was the 200 IM where they scored 139 points.
