The Chicago Bears are keeping a sharp eye out for the NFL schedule, but could their season get underway even earlier than other teams?
Talk has been ramping up for weeks about the Bears potentially opening their 2026 season against the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, and you can add NFL insider Adam Schefter to the list of pundits who believe that indeed is the way the league will handle the start of its season.
That game would be scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, and would air on NBC.
“My guess right now is that it will be the Bears in Seattle for the Wednesday night opener against the Seahawks,” Schefter said during a Monday interview with Pat McAfee on ESPN.
The Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants will be playing on the first Sunday Night Football game of the season, removing them as potential opponents for the Seahawks. The San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams will also be playing in Melbourne, Australia for the season opener.
That leaves just five teams that could play Seattle in the opener. In addition to the Bears, that list includes a Super Bowl rematch with the New England Patriots, along with showdowns with the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers and Arizona Cardinals.
While the season-opening game has not yet been announced, the NFL has revealed a few other games on its slate. The Cowboys are set to play the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3 in Brazil, and the Cowboys will host the Philadelphia Eagles in a Thanksgiving game in Dallas.
The Bears will have one of the toughest schedules in the NFL even aside from their showdown with the reigning Super Bowl champion Seahawks.
Their home schedule includes the reigning AFC champion Patriots, as well as the AFC South-champion Jacksonville Jaguars and the NFC East-champion Eagles.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints and New York Jets will also travel to Chicago this season.
The team’s road schedule isn’t much easier. They’ll have to travel to Buffalo to take on the Bills, and they’ll also have to take on the NFC South-champion Carolina Panthers in Charlotte.
The Bears will also travel to face the Miami Dolphins and the Atlanta Falcons.
Their schedule will also include their traditional home-and-home games against the Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings.
The full NFL schedule will be released on Thursday evening. NBC Chicago will host a schedule release special on the station’s 24/7 Streaming News service, hosted by Lou Canellis.
