Budget season continues this week in local government, as the town managers of Hillsborough and Carrboro and the county manager in Durham all unveil their budget plans for the coming fiscal year. In addition, residents in Orange County and Pittsboro will get a chance to weigh in on their respective budget proposals, and the Chapel Hill Town Council will tackle one critical issue in their own budget – namely funding for the town’s library, which is facing major cuts at the county level. And as if that weren’t already enough, elected officials are also tackling other high-profile issues this week: a possible moratorium on new AI data centers in Hillsborough, and the future of Flock safety cameras in Pittsboro.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners meets at 7 p.m. Monday, May 11. Town manager Eric Peterson will deliver his two-year budget proposal, and the town board will consider a 60-day moratorium on approving any new AI data centers or data mining facilities, while staff work on developing possible new land use regulations for them. Orange County Commissioners will hold a pair of budget work sessions this week: Tuesday, May 12, and Thursday, May 14, both at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building in Hillsborough. Tuesday’s agenda includes a public hearing on the budget where residents can weigh in with their own thoughts; Thursday’s work session will focus primarily on funding for public education, including Durham Tech as well as Orange County’s two school districts. Get links to both agendas here.

The Carrboro Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, with only one agenda item: town manager Patrice Toney will present her recommended budget and capital improvement plan for the upcoming fiscal year. Read the full agenda at this link.

The Chapel Hill Town Council meets Wednesday, May 13, at 6 p.m. in the Chapel Hill Public Library. This week’s meeting is entirely devoted to a work session on the budget – with a focus on the Chapel Hill library, which is facing over $600,000 in funding cuts at the county level over the next two years. And the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board is slated to meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 13. Their agenda will be available at this link.

Chatham and Durham Counties

The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners meets at 6 p.m. Monday, May 11. Their agenda is a busy one, starting with next year’s budget: the town board will get the results of a community budget survey and hold a public hearing so residents can share their thoughts in person. Town manager Jonathan Franklin will also present his proposed five-year capital improvement plan.

In addition, the board will consider a motion to continue using Flock safety cameras through the current contract’s end date in January, subject to various conditions including significant restrictions on when the footage may be used or shared with other agencies. (Among other things, the motion would specify that Flock cameras may not be used for immigration enforcement.)

The Chatham County school board meets at 6 p.m. Monday, May 11. Click here for the agenda, which includes a discussion of next year’s proposed $54.6 million budget.

Durham County Commissioners meet at 7 p.m. Monday, May 11. Click here for the agenda, which includes county manager Claudia Odom Hager’s budget recommendation for the upcoming fiscal year.

County commissioners also meet jointly with the Durham school board at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 12; then the school board will hold their own work session at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 14. The agendas for both of those meetings will be available via this link.
