One difference could save you – how to distinguish the Hantavirus from seasonal flu ...Egypt

News by : (EGYPT INDEPENDENT) -

With fluctuating weather and rising rates of respiratory illnesses, it is more vital than ever to be able to identify between the common seasonal flu and some rare viral infections that begin with similar symptoms – such as the Hantavirus.

Common Symptoms

Although fever, fatigue, and body aches are common symptoms of both diseases, doctors emphasize that subtle details can reveal the difference early on – especially as symptoms develop during the first few days of infection.

According to data from the Ministry of Health and Population, influenza is a common seasonal viral infection easily transmitted through droplets produced by coughing and sneezing, and it often appears accompanied by well-known respiratory symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat, and cough.

Hantavirus, on the other hand, differs entirely in its mode of transmission. It is often associated with rodents and areas contaminated with rodent droppings, and infection can occur through inhaling contaminated air or contact with enclosed and unsanitary spaces.

According to the World Health Organization, the most distinctive feature of Hantavirus compared to influenza is the absence of typical cold symptoms at the outset.

Those infected usually do not experience a runny nose or sneezing, while fever appears suddenly along with severe muscle aches concentrated in the back, thighs, and shoulders.

Additionally, gastrointestinal disturbances may appear early in some Hantavirus patients, such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

These are symptoms not commonly associated with seasonal influenza in most adults.

Doctors warn that the real danger lies in the progression of the illness. While influenza improves gradually over days, a Hantavirus patient may experience a temporary period of remission before a sudden deterioration that includes severe shortness of breath, a dry cough, and extreme fatigue—signs that require immediate medical attention.

The World Health Organization indicates that suspicion of Hantavirus infection becomes more important when there is a recent history of exposure to rodents or cleaning of abandoned warehouses and enclosed spaces, especially if fever and muscle aches appear without obvious cold symptoms.

How does the infection spread?

The Ministry of Health in Egypt confirmed that the Hantavirus remains extremely rare locally, and there are no indications of widespread transmission.

Prevention relies primarily on general hygiene, rodent control, and ventilating enclosed spaces before cleaning, the ministry said, along with the use of gloves and masks when handling potentially contaminated areas.

Doctors advise against ignoring any acute respiratory symptoms that may appear days after a fever, especially if accompanied by unusual fatigue or difficulty breathing, as rapid diagnosis can be crucial in managing severe cases.
