Phoenix, Arizona native Sasha Volkova has announced her verbal commitment to the admission process* at Columbia University for 2027-28. She confirmed to SwimSwam:
“I am SO excited to announce my commitment to the admissions process at Columbia University, where I will continue my athletic and academic career at the Division I level! I would also like to thank Coach Demerae and Coach Diana for this incredible opportunity! I am beyond excited and looking forward to my future in New York City!!! Go Lions! ”
A two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American from Desert Vista High School, Volkova swims year-round with Gold Medal Swim Club and specializes in breaststroke and IM. She placed 3rd in the 100 breast and 4th in the 200 IM at the 2025 Arizona High School Division I Championship, where she earned a PB in the 100 breast (1:03.49). A month later, she competed at Winter Juniors West and finaled in the 200 breast (8th). She hit PBs in the 200 breast (2:14.38) and 200 IM (2:07.33) and came within .25 of her new time in the 100 breast.
At Four Corners Sectionals in March, Volkova placed 13th in the 100 breast, 6th in the 200 breast, 28th in the 200 fly, 30th in the 200 IM, and 26th in the 400 IM with season-best performances in the 200 fly and 400 IM.
Last summer, she swam the 50/100/200 breast at Summer Junior Nationals and the 200 IM in time trials. She wrapped up long course season with PBs in all four events (34.18/1:13.76/2:35.50 and 2:25.74).
Volkova will join the Lions’ class of 2031 with fellow commits Carina Dai, Hannah Song, Isabella Zhang, Mia Mracna, and Tamara Kret. Her best times would have scored at the 2026 Ivy League Women’s Championships in the ‘A’ final of the 200 breast and the ‘C’ final of the 100 breast.

200 breast – 2:14.38 100 breast – 1:03.49 400 IM – 4:27.64 200 IM – 2:07.33*Note: A verbal commitment between an Ivy League coach and a prospective student-athlete is not an offer of admission, as only the Admission Office has that authority. The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.
