Alabama baseball outlasts South Carolina, secures back-to-back SEC sweeps ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

Alabama baseball had a weekend to remember in Columbia, as the Crimson Tide stayed hot with the SEC Tournament looming.

One day after securing their first series win at South Carolina in 20 years, the 19th-ranked Tide completed their second straight SEC sweep with a dramatic 7-6 victory over the Gamecocks on Sunday afternoon. Rob Vaughn’s team had just come off a home sweep over Vanderbilt the weekend before, and this time Alabama showed its force in conference play on the road in improving to 35-17 overall and 16-11 in the SEC.

Meanwhile, South Carolina‘s struggles continued this season, as the Gamecocks fell to 22-30 overall and 7-20 in conference play.

Alabama looked to be cruising to the sweep on Sunday after jumping all over South Carolina with 3 runs in the first inning, then adding on with 2 runs each in the fifth and sixth innings. But the Tide’s 7-run lead almost evaporated, with the gritty Gamecocks rallying for 4 runs in the eighth inning, then pushing across 1 run in the ninth before falling short.

Freshman Myles Upchurch tied his season high in innings pitched for Alabama, going 6 innings and allowing only 1 run on 6 hits, with 3 walks. Upchurch had 5 strikeouts in recording his 7th victory of the season.

Hagan Banks tried to close it out for the Tide in the ninth, but there was drama to come. Pinch-hitter Dawson Harman singled up the middle to cut Bama’s once big lead to a single run.

Vaughn was forced to pull Banks and called on Matthew Heiberger, who recorded a strikeout and a groundout to seal the deal, end South Carolina’s rally and secure another Crimson Tide SEC sweep.

Eric Hines led Alabama’s offensive attack, going 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. John Lemm also had another big day at the plate, with a double and 2 RBI.

Bama will close its regular season with a home series against Ole Miss that starts Thursday, as the Crimson Tide try to keep building momentum for the SEC Tournament.

Alabama has its eyes on the upcoming SEC tourney, but the Crimson Tide will also be gunning for a trip to Omaha next month to play for a national title. Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about the top teams in the mix to be holding the national championship trophy in June:
