It wasn’t pretty. At all. It was downright ugly, in fact, but nobody with any association with Arsenal will care one jot.

With this 1-0 win over West Ham, the Premier League leaders took a huge, potentially decisive, step towards winning the title. It remains entirely in their own hands with just two games remaining. Win both of those and their long, painful wait to lift the trophy will be over.

They had Leandro Trossard to thank for their goal, the Belgian puncturing the tension that had built up over 82 minutes of a game with huge consequences at both ends of the table with what could be the most important goal of his career.

But Arsenal were also indebted to the presence of the Video Assistant Referee. Callum Wilson thought he had equalised deep into second-half stoppage time, but following a long, dramatic VAR review, the goal was chalked off due to a foul on David Raya.

But this game wasn’t only about the title race. As well as that decision keeping Arsenal’s fate in their own hands, it was also a dagger in the hearts of West Ham, for whom a point would have been huge in their fight for survival. Instead, they are staring at increasingly likely relegation.

Arsenal had come into the game as huge favourites, still chasing league and Champions League double after rediscovering their form in the last few weeks.

In what was Arteta’s 500th game with Arsenal (350 as manager, 150 as player), he named the same starting XI for a third consecutive games for the first time since the end of the 2023-24 season. He spoke before the match about the “change” in the mood around the team over the past couple of games, and clearly wanted to build on the momentum of the wins over Fulham and Atlético Madrid.

And they set out with real intent. Riccardo Calafiori had a huge chance very early on but just delayed taking his shot too long and it was deflected behind. Then, from the resulting corner, Trossard had a header well saved and then saw another hit the woodwork. Viktor Gyökeres, Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhães also had efforts before clock had even reached 11 minutes. Only two teams have had more shots in the opening quarter of an hour of a Premier League game this season than Arsenal had here (seven) – Brighton vs Nottingham Forest and Manchester United vs Bournemouth (both 8).

Not long after, Calafiori’s glanced header from a Declan Rice free-kick was cleared off the line by former Arsenal centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos and desperately scrambled clear. The visitors were ramping up the pressure and with almost 70 minutes of the game still to play, it was natural to begin to wonder how West Ham could survive a whole match.

An even greater wonder was how they would threaten the Arsenal goal, with almost all of the early play coming deep in West Ham territory.

However, Arsenal’s momentum was disrupted by Ben White going off with a knee injury midway through the first half. Arteta made the decision to bring Martín Zubimendi on and move Declan Rice to right-back, but the main consequence of doing so was Arsenal swiftly losing control of the game. Before White’s substitution on 27 minutes, Arsenal had nine shots and West Ham had none, but West Ham had three to Arsenal’s one in the remainder of the first half.

82:06 – Arsenal’s winner today was timed at 82 minutes and six seconds, their latest goal in a 1-0 Premier League win since November 2023 against Brentford (Kai Havertz in 89th minute). Relief. pic.twitter.com/0MGWg0NPwM

Arteta had indicated with his team selection that he had wanted the benefits of continuity of a settled XI, and it was clear how much this injury had affected his team.

The Arsenal manager attempted to correct matters at half-time by moving Rice back into the central midfield, but to do so he withdrew Calafiori for Cristhian Mosquera. At the break, the Arsenal left-back had had a match-high three shots and three touches in the opposition box. He was also the only Arsenal player to have had a shot that wasn’t from a set-piece.

They continued to dominate the ball after the break – they had 78% possession in the first 15 minutes of the second period – but struggled to find a route to goal against a West Ham side only too happy to drop back and protect what they had.

Arteta sought to further correct the earlier error he made with his substitution when he withdrew Zubimendi, having earlier brought him on, and threw on Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard. It was the third time that an Arsenal player has been both subbed on and subbed off in the Premier League this season (also Trossard twice).

As the clock ticked towards full-time, West Ham started to show a little more ambition, and they had a massive chance when Mateus Fernandes played a neat one-two with Pablo to get free in the penalty area. He had the whole goal to aim for, but David Raya raced off his line did brilliantly to keep the ball out.

More drama was to come, though, as Ødegaard danced into the West Ham area and laid the ball back for Trossard to send the away end into raptures with his first goal in 26 appearances in all competitions.

It looked like that would be it for the game, but the wait while a decision was made hon Pablo’s challenge on Raya provided yet more entertainment. Eventually, referee Chris Kavanagh ruled that the goal should not stand, breaking handing Arsenal the most dramatic of lifelines and breaking West Ham hearts. The Hammers will now be praying Tottenham slip up on Monday night, with this result confirming that Leeds and Nottingham Forest are now mathematically safe.

Arsenal now just need to beat Burnley and Crystal Palace to secure their first Premier League title in 22 years. They will hope those two games are rather more routine than this one.
