An off-duty suburban Crystal Lake firefighter sprang into action as he drove home from work Saturday, using a garden hose to keep a fire at bay.
According to Crystal Lake officials, the off-duty firefighter was headed home just before 9 a.m. Saturday when he saw a pergola that had caught fire behind a residence in the 400 block of Golf Road.
After calling the fire department, he then sprang into action himself, using a garden hose to help keep the flames at bay until other firefighters arrived on the scene.
Now, the department says the firefighter’s quick thinking is being praised, as the fire only caused minor damage to the pergola, to the home’s siding, and to the deck.
There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire.
An investigation revealed the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials, and officials are urging the public to use care when discarding those materials.
