Arizona Cardinals fifth-round draft pick and former Texas Tech wide receiver Reggie Virgil already fits the NFL mold at 6-foot-3, but he’s not satisfied with his physique.
“I know I gotta get bigger, though,” Virgil, who weighed in at the 2026 NFL Draft Combine at 187 pounds, told reporters Thursday. “That’s a no brainer. We haven’t really talked much about that, but (wide receivers coach Tony Sorrentino) definitely wants me to get bigger a little bit.
“I know it myself, like 187, 190 ain’t going to cut it in this league, so just want to fill out my frame more and be able to obtain those hits or be able to go dig out those safeties or backers that are about 220.”
The Red Raider who came to Tempe on a top 30 visit in the pre-draft process said early on at his new home he has been in contact with a pair of veteran receivers in Michael Wilson, who had a breakout 2025 season, and free agent signee Kendrick Bourne.
Virgil inked a four-year rookie deal with Arizona on Thursday along with Iowa linebacker Karson Sharar (sixth-round pick) and Ole Miss offensive lineman Jayden Williams (seventh).
He is coming off his lone season at Texas Tech, having spent three previous years at Miami (OH). Virgil made a career-most 57 receptions for 705 yards and six touchdowns, highlighted by eight grabs and 86 yards against BYU in the Big 12 title game.
“I feel like (I have) a diverse route tree and my speed, (I’m) able to take the top off of defenses,” Virgil said. “Just worked on my underneath game at Tech, too, so just being able to catch little screens or catch anything behind the line of scrimmage and make a play. So, those are my strengths.”
Though he didn’t show the eye-popping speed with a 4.57-second 40-yard dash, which ranked 32nd out of 34 participating receivers at the combine, Virgil said he prides himself on the ability to block for someone his size. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein also praised him pre-draft for having “sticky” hands that “do their job to finish through contact.”
Virgil said he’s been working with and getting tips from past and present NFL receivers like Mohamed Sanu (2012-2022) and newly minted San Francisco 49er Mike Evans.
“Run after catch is really big for me right now,” Virgil said, who averaged 3.2 yards after catch in 14 games across 2025, according to Pro Football Focus.
Virgil said he shares an agent with Evans, and all it took was telling that agent that Evans was his favorite football player to get the pair connected. The former 2014 draft pick even watched Virgil in a Texas Tech uniform with the added convenience of being a Texas resident.
“He’s been like a big brother, for sure. We talk about anything,” Virgil said.
The Florida native got his first chance to work on that part of his game on Friday, as Cardinals rookie minicamp goes through Sunday.
He will don No. 82 for Arizona after wearing No. 1 in Lubbock.
Reggie Virgil’s mom thinks he has no life outside football
Though Virgil said his mother is his hero with how she “owns her stuff,” she sees her son as a one-trick pony.
“I don’t really do too much. My mom thinks I’m boring, too,” Virgil said. “She says all I can do is catch a football.”
