Rookie Minicamp Notes, 2026 Schedule Thoughts, POTUS and Rupert vs. the NFL? And Other Bears Bullets ...Middle East

Day 110 of the Chicago Bears offseason. I have some patio furniture that I need to put together. However, I also need to find a way to keep birds off my balcony because they are starting to irk me. Does anyone have any tips or tricks? I’m all ears…

We had a pretty loaded Friday. Here are some of my favorite posts in what was a jam-packed day:

There are only 123 days until the NFL’s regular season opens up with the Seattle Seahawks hosting a team to be announced later on a Wednesday night. Will that team be the Bears? Perhaps. If I were a betting man, I’d wager that Seattle’s first opponent will be either the Bears or the Dallas Cowboys. And if I were a betting man, I’d bet the OVER on whatever number of “primetime” games you set the line at for 2026. This team could be in prime viewing windows 6-7 times this season, and it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest. Here are four 2026 Chicago Bears schedule predictions that I hope you don’t take too seriously: Week 1 at Seattle — Coby Bryant return game + the NFC Championship Game we didn’t get (but definitely deserved!). Week 2 at Buffalo — Bills open their new stadium + DJ Moore revenge game. Bears-Jaguars will be in a prime viewing window — This might end up in the FOX or CBS late afternoon window, but this is easy to market as a matchup between the two most-ballyhooed QB prospects / No. 1 overall picks in the last 10 years with Caleb Williams and Trevor Lawrence squaring off. Chicago will play at least one holiday game — Black Friday rematch (this at home) against the Eagles? Christmas Day vs. the Packers? Thanksgiving vs. the Lions? DJ Moore’s Christmas cleats from 2023. (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images) Some fun finds in this Sun-Times story by Patrick Finley, who points out that a handful of the players the Bears have in for tryouts during the team’s rookie minicamp have local connections. Wide receiver Scotty Miller (Barrington), Mac Uihlein (Northwestern), Josh Kreutz (Illinois), and Jai Williams (Lake Forest) are among those putting in work this weekend at Halas Hall. Sean Hammond (Tribune) reports that the Bears were in communication with Brian Urlacher to tell the Hall of Fame linebacker that his number was going back into circulation. And for what it’s worth, rookie center Logan Jones — who is getting the honor of being the first Bears player to wear No. 54 since Urlacher’s retirement — is ready to embrace what comes with it:

“To be able to do that, and to be able to honor his number and who he is — when you think of the Chicago Bears, that’s kind of who you think of. To see that number out in practice and stuff, it just lets everybody think, ‘Oh, that’s Brian Urlacher’s number.’ … It’s kind of supporting his memory and letting everybody see the legacy he left. So to be able to wear that number is really cool, and hopefully I get the chance to meet him one day too.”

This is not a headline I was expecting to read in 2026:

Fox Corporation founder Rupert Murdoch reportedly dined with Donald Trump to encourage federal pressure on the NFL. awfulannouncing.com/nfl/rupert-m…[image or embed]

— Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing.bsky.social) May 9, 2026 at 7:15 AM “Steelers GM admits he has no idea where Aaron Rodgers is” is a headline that made me laugh out loud. Quarterback drama out west: Arizona Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett is skipping voluntary workouts as his push for a new contract continues. ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss points out that Brissett is slated to earn $4.88 million (with only $1.5 million in guarantees) while free-agent addition Gardner Minshew is set to make $5.14 million guaranteed. This is a nice reminder that if something makes you raise an eyebrow, following the money will help you find your answer.

Over at BN Cubs, Brett writes about Freddy Peralta trade rumors. Given the Northsiders’ winning ways and their need for top-end starting pitching, I can see a potential match here if the Mets fall apart and go into sell-mode. Even if that doesn’t happen, I expect the Cubs to be a team mentioned in all sorts of trade rumors if they continue to play well. Our friends in the Bleacher Nation Basketball Department have a 2026 WNBA preview. Four members of the Chicago Blackhawks are on USA Hockey’s World Championship preliminary roster.
