Kaelia Hughes has announced she will join Miami-FL this upcoming 2026-2027 season. Hughes just finished her sophomore season at Arizona State.
Hughes arrived in Tempe in fall 2024 and finished her freshman season at the 2025 Big 12 Championships. There she won the ‘C’ final of the 200 breast in a lifetime best 2:13.09. She also was 22nd in the 100 breast (1:02.05) and 30th in the 200 free (1:50.41).
The Naperville, Illinois native returned for her sophomore season and finished her season at the team’s dual meet against Arizona at the start of February. She swam a season best 2:16.23 in their dual meet against Grand Canyon in January. Her season best 1:02.18 100 breast came from the Tennessee Invite.
Hughes’ Best SCY Times Are:
100 breast: 1:01.40 200 breast: 2:13.09 200 free: 1:49.77 (high school)The Miami-FL women finished 12th out of 15 teams at the 2026 ACC Championships with 322 points. Divers Margo O’Meara and Chiara Pellacani led the way with 60 individual points each. Ashlyn Massey led the swimmers with 29 individual points.
Based on her best times, Hughes would have made the ACC ‘C’ final of the 100 breast, an event Miami only had one entry in as Zofia Sobczak was 34th (1:04.87). Hughes would have just missed the ‘C’ final of the 200 breast as her best time of a 2:13.09 would have been 25th in prelims. It took a 2:12.74 to make the ‘C’ final. Miami-FL only had two entries in the event, with Sophie Lenze finishing 38th (2:16.45) and Sobczak 46th (2:20.58).
Hughes brings relay potential as well. Lenze split a 1:02.68 on the team’s 400 medley relay at ACCs. That relay finished 13th and was only 0.11 seconds behind 12th place SMU.
Hughes will arrive this fall and join the junior class that includes Marissa Inouye, Carly Lahr, and Ashlyn Massey.Read the full story on SwimSwam: Kaelia Hughes Transferring to Miami-FL After Two Seasons With Arizona State
