At the center of the series was Johnny Whitaker, the red-haired child actor who played Jody Davis opposite Anissa Jones’ Buffy, Kathy Garver's Cissy and Brian Keith’s Uncle Bill. Nearly 60 years after the show premiered, Whitaker is now reflecting on the extraordinary highs and painful lows that followed his years as one of television’s most recognizable child stars.

“Well, I turned 65 last year… I’m now 66,” Whitaker said. “And I decided that I was going to throw out four Hail Mary passes.”

Another project is a documentary about Portugal’s approach to drug policy, which Whitaker says connects directly to his own recovery journey.

Whitaker is also working on a memoir and preparing for a new acting role in the upcoming film Skye Bleu.

Whitaker’s road to fame began almost accidentally after he filled in for another child during a church performance. A member of the congregation encouraged his mother to take him to an agent, and he landed a job almost immediately.

“When they saw Anissa and I looked like twins, they said, ‘We’re changing the script and it’s going to be twins,’” Whitaker recalled.

Whitaker spoke candidly about the emotional impact of Jones’ 1976 overdose death at just 18 years old, saying that in retrospect he wishes he had done more to help his former co-star.

Years later, Whitaker struggled with addiction himself after a series of personal traumas, including a divorce and the death of a girlfriend. He eventually entered recovery and says he has remained sober for nearly three decades.

“I am glad to have gone through what I have,” he said. “It’s still not easy today, but I am blessed to still be here.”
