TV Guide released a list of the best soap opera moments of all time. In the list, topical stories such as Marlena’s possession on Days of Our Lives and the heartbreaking story of BJ’s heart on General Hospital ranked highly, but it was the star-studded wedding between Luke and Laura that made its way to number one on the list.
Luke Spencer arrived in town in 1978 to assist his sister, Bobbie Spencer (Jacklyn Zeman), in breaking up Laura Webber (Francis) and her then partner Scotty Baldwin (Kin Shriner). Throughout the storyline, Luke targeted Laura and was doing whatever it took to cause terror in her life. But when Laura got injured in a car accident, Luke decided that he had had enough and would no longer do anything to harm Laura.
On October 5, 1979, Luke and Laura's lives would forever change. After having a horrible day, Luke began heavily drinking. Laura checked on him at work, and it was then that Luke forced himself on Laura and sexually assaulted her at the disco.
The Summer of 1980 saw Luke and Laura go on the run in search of The Left-Handed Boy, which would serve as a means to put Frank Smith away for good. Many twists and turns occurred, but throughout the adventure, Laura and Luke both developed feelings for each other and ultimately fell in love.
That was until 1981, when Luke, Laura, and World Security Bureau agent Robert Scorpio (Tristian Rogers) saved the world from the evil Mikkos Cassadine, who planned to use a diamond named the Ice Princess to freeze the world.

On January 3, 2022, it was revealed that Luke had passed away in a cable car accident in Austria, and following Geary’s passing in 2026, the ABC soap opera paid tribute to the late star by airing a retrospective look at his storylines throughout the years.
