ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Roberts Wesleyan University is offering three full tuition scholarships to prospective graduate students looking to enter the teaching field.
News10NBC’s Erin Mahon spoke to the education school’s dean and students to hear why they believe it’s important to invest in future teachers. The university says this is its response to teacher shortages, making education accessible to those teaching the next generation.
“We all have those teachers that inspired us or created some impact on our lives. And that’s really what we’re trying to grow here,” Huck said.
Dr. Adam Huck is the dean of the School of Education and Social Work. He says over the last year, the department revised and introduced 14 education programs. The Teacher Impact Scholarship is one of those.
“We want to seek those out and grow that. And again, push that narrative of why it’s great to be a teacher and the impact that you do have. Yes, it’s a challenging profession, but it’s so rewarding at the end of day too,” Huck said.
The scholarship asks applicants to answer one of several prompts in either a video or written format. Huck told Mahon the idea came from the university’s commitment to honoring teachers and the importance of their work.
Mahon sat down with two students — one entering the grad program and one graduating from it — who shared their thoughts on teaching. Gianna Ryndock, a business undergraduate student entering an education masters program next year , addressed common concerns about the profession.
“I think that kind of a common stereotype is that it might not be paid well or it’s not really a growing industry, but we’re always going to need good teachers. And on this side, while I’m on Earth, I want to continue to just pour into the next generation. I believe that one day I’ll be with Jesus in heaven. So while I am here, what I’m doing is just serving him. I’m serving him as a teacher,” Ryndock said.
Abigail Bovee, a graduate student, reflected on why she continues pursuing teaching.
“The job is hard — it’s a hard job, but it’s also a really rewarding job. And I think just being there for them academically, socially, emotionally and being that person that they can come and share their happy moments, their sad moments, the moments that they’re proud of. I think that’s why I keep coming back,” Bovee said.
The scholarship launches this fall. Applications are open now through June 15. More information on how to apply can be found at this link.
