Around the NFL: League Strikes Deal with Referees Association, Schedule Release, Rookie Deals, More ...Middle East

The NFL and its officials will head into 2026 without any labor drama. The NFL Referees Association has ratified a new seven-year collective bargaining agreement with the league, ending negotiations that stretched across multiple years and removing what had been a genuine threat of a work stoppage before the season.

NFL, Referees Association Strike Deal, Averting Work Stoppage Threat

The full terms of the deal haven’t been released, but the broad strokes paint a picture of a league getting more oversight mechanisms in exchange for a significant financial commitment to its officials.

According to an ESPN report, the NFL will gain formal access to officials during the offseason, including at minicamps, training camps, and joint practices, as part of a structured training program. The league also secured greater flexibility to use performance metrics in making postseason assignments, rather than being strictly bound by seniority, and will develop a deeper bench of officials league-wide.

The money side moved, too. Earlier this spring, the NFL proposed a 10 percent bump in regular-season game fees and up to a 30 percent increase for officials working the Super Bowl, per sources. One item that didn’t land for the league: extending the probationary period for new officials from three to four years. That stays at three.

The NFLRA’s existing deal was set to expire on May 31. The stalemate became uncomfortable enough by early March that the NFL began recruiting potential replacement officials from college football, and owners had greenlit a rules package that would have allowed the league’s headquarters in New York to assist with in-game officiating. Both of those contingencies are now moot.

NFL Schedule Release Date Set for May 14; International Games Coming Day Before

Mark your calendars: the NFL will drop the full 2026 regular season schedule next Thursday, May 14, the league announced.

The day before, on Wednesday, May 13, fans will get one piece of the puzzle early; the remaining international game schedule will be unveiled on Good Morning Football at 8 a.m. CT. Two international matchups are already locked in: the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams will open the season in Melbourne, Australia, on Thursday, Sept. 10 (Week 1), and the Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens will play in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, Sept. 27 (Week 3).

The full schedule release show airs at 7 p.m. CT on May 14 on NFL Network, ESPN2, and NFL+. Broadcast partners will also be rolling out select game announcements throughout the week leading up to the big reveal.

Of course, the schedule itself is only part of the entertainment. Teams have turned the annual release into its own content competition, with the Los Angeles Chargers holding down an unofficial championship belt at this point.

They’ve won the day in four consecutive years (2022, 2023, 2024, and last season), typically by leaning into whatever scandal or storyline has the internet’s attention. In 2024, they riffed on comments Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker made at a commencement speech. This year, given that the Chargers and Patriots are on each other’s schedule, don’t be surprised if Los Angeles takes a swing at the Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini situation.

The Chargers are the team to beat, but schedule release day always produces a few surprises. We’ll find out who’s up to the challenge on May 14.
