FAIRPORT, N.Y. — Two weeks after a recorded bar fight in Fairport, the village of Fairport has picked a new police chief.
The village selected a captain from the Irondequoit Police Department. Village officials made an official offer to what they hope is the new police chief, but they’re waiting on a waiver from New York State before it becomes official.
“We made him an offer”
“We’ve made an offer. We’re really excited to have him come on board,” Fairport administrator Bryan White said.
He posted the position pick on Monroe County’s HR website. The selection is Andrew Whitaker, a captain in Irondequoit Police. The listing shows a permanent appointment for chief of police at $135,000.
IPD Chief Scott Peters said Whitaker was unavailable to talk to News10NBC today.Whitaker and Fairport are waiting on a state waiver that small departments use to hire experienced police officers to be chief.
News10NBC took the news to Main Street.
“I believe a full time policeman in the area would be perfect,” Rivoli said. “Mostly for the main street, the main drag where all the bars are.”
Concern over viral bar fight
When the hire is official, the new chief will have to deal with concern over a particular bar fight caught on cell phone video. One man was charged with assault.Fairport has one of the biggest, most popular bar scenes in the county and one of the smallest police forces.
“Did the events that happened recently, did that quicken the pace of the decision to hire the chief?” News10NBC’s Berkeley Brean asked.“No, we’ve been working on hiring a police chief for months. It didn’t change the pace or impact that whatsoever,” White said.
The village has a meeting Monday night, but the office of police chief is not on the agenda. The county website says the job starts on May 27.
Fairport Police carries 10 full-time officers. Two of the positions are open, not including the chief, and the department’s website says they are actively hiring.
