George Groves, a competitor at the 2025 Winter Junior Championships, has announced his commitment to swim for Georgia Institute of Technology beginning in the fall of 2026.
“I am unbelievably happy and blessed to finally announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I would first like to thank God for equipping me with the ability to compete at a high level, but also the determination to push through the many trials and tribulations that come with the sport of swimming. Next a huge thank you to my family and coaches, especially Mom, Dad, my siblings and Coach Greg Gillette, for providing me with the best possible support system that anyone could have. Lastly, I am super thankful for the amazing coaching staff at Georgia Tech for providing and opportunity that I have dreamed about ever since I started swimming. I cannot wait to be a part of such a fantastic team in @gtswimdive! Go Jackets!”
Originally from South Carolina, Groves currently trains year-round with Aiken-Augusta Swim League just across the state line in Georgia. A versatile threat in the water, he excels at free, back, fly and IM.
Groves is coming off of a great season of racing, having set new lifetime bests in nearly all of his events. He posted a series of fast swims at the 2025 Georgia Senior State Championships in December, where he placed 2nd in the 200 fly (1:51.14), 3rd in the 100 fly (49.84) and 12th in the 50 back (24.36), setting personal best times in each event. He also logged a best time in the 200 free (1:40.52) as the leadoff on the 800 free relay and contested the 50 free (21.80), 100 free (46.67) and 50 fly (24.04).
The following week, Groves raced four events at the 2025 Winter Junior Championship East. He contested the 200 free (1:40.83), 500 free (4:31.88 – PB), 100 back (51.28) and 200 back (1:48.94 – PB).
At the Southeastern Meet of Champions in March, Groves turned in another string of top performances. He took the runner-up spot in the 500 free (4:26.75) and 200 back (1:46.94) and placed 3rd in the 200 free (1:38.05), 4th in the 100 back (50.29) and 5th in the 100 free (45.16) and 200 IM (1:51.31), logging lifetime best times in each.

To earn a second swim at the 2026 ACC Championships, it took times of 42.67/1:34.69/4:20.07 in the 100/200/500 free, 46.71/1:42.39 in the 100/200 back and 46.43/1:45.04 in the 100/200 fly, putting Groves outside the cutoff in each of his top events.
On the team itself, Groves is poised to be the Yellow Jackets 2nd-fastest competitor in the 100 back and 200 back next season, as well as their 4th-fastest competitor in the 500 free, 100 fly and 200 fly, although that does not account for the other incoming freshmen.
Joining Groves in the pool in the fall are Lucas Odorici, Yahav Halag, Kerem Ilyem, Leo Verschooten, James Sorenson, Anthony Rulkowski and Christopher Koch, who should all make for strong training partners over the next four years.
