There Will Be an English Club in All Three European Finals For the First Time ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

Arsenal, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace have already made history, with this the first time in a single season that English clubs have reached the finals of three European competitions.

For the first time ever, English clubs have progressed to the finals of all three European competitions in the same season.

Arsenal secured their spot in the Champions League showpiece by seeing off Atlético Madrid on Tuesday. They were joined on Thursday by Aston Villa, who thrashed Nottingham Forest to reach the final of the Europa League, and Crystal Palace, who made it past Shakhtar Donetsk to reach the final of the Conference League.

This is only the fifth edition of the Conference League, which started in 2021-22, meaning there have only been five opportunities for teams from a single nation to simultaneously reach the finals of these three competitions.

However, for 39 years from 1960 to 1999, the Cup Winners’ Cup ran alongside the European Cup/Champions League and the UEFA Cup, meaning there were plenty of chances before the Conference League was born.

Even so, English teams have never before contested three major European finals in the same season. Whatever happens when, at the end of the month, Arsenal face PSG in the Champions League final, Aston Villa face Freiburg in the Europa League, and Crystal Palace take on Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League, history has already been made.

There have been occasions when 3+ different English teams have made it to European finals in the same season. Most recent was 2024-25, when Tottenham beat Manchester United in the Europa League final, and Chelsea won the Conference League.

In 2018-19, Premier League sides took up all four positions in the European finals, as Liverpool beat Spurs in the Champions League final a few days after Chelsea had beaten Arsenal in the Europa League final. In 2020-21, Chelsea beat Manchester City in the Champions League final, while United lost to Villarreal in the Europa League final.

However, in both of those seasons, there were only two European competitions, so no chance to have an English team contesting a third final in the same campaign.

That was also the case in 2005-06, when Arsenal and Middlesbrough lost European finals, but the Cup Winners’ Cup had ended seven years previously, so the Champions League and Europa League (or UEFA Cup, as it was known at the time) were the only two competitions available.

What About Other Nations?

Although 2025-26 is the first season in which English teams will compete in three European finals, it isn’t the first time teams from any nation have done so.

The only other nations to achieve the feat are Italy and Spain. Italy have managed it an impressive four times, including once in the Conference League era.

In 2022-23, Internazionale made it to the Champions League final, Roma got to the final of the Europa League, and Fiorentina contested the Conference League final. Unfortunately for the Serie A sides, though, all three lost.

The other three occasions when Italy had teams in all three major European finals came in the space of five seasons between 1988 and 1993. And in the middle one of those, when Italian football was at its height, they won all three.

In 1989-90, Milan won the European Cup, Juventus beat fellow Italians Fiorentina to win the UEFA Cup, and Sampdoria won the Cup Winners’ Cup.

The other two times, they won two out of three. In 1988-89, Milan won the European Cup and Napoli won the UEFA Cup, only for Sampdoria to lose the Cup Winners’ Cup. And in 1992-93, Juventus won the UEFA Cup and Parma won the Cup Winners’ Cup, but Milan lost the Champions League final to Marseille.

1985-86 was the season in which Spanish teams contested all three European finals, but Real Madrid were the only winners. They won the UEFA Cup, while Barcelona lost the European Cup final and Atlético Madrid lost the Cup Winners’ Cup final.

Will All Three English Teams Take Home the Trophy?

Arsenal, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace have the opportunity to become only the second ever set of single-nation winners of all three European competitions. And the Opta supercomputer can tell us precisely how likely it is that they manage it.

All three are, according to the supercomputer, favourites to lift their respective trophies. At the time of writing, Arsenal are given a 55.8% chance of winning the Champions League; Villa are given a 65.3% chance of winning the Europa League, and Palace are deemed 59.4% favourites to win the Conference League.

Combine all of those events and you get a 21.6% chance of all three lifting their respective trophies.

In short, there is a half-decent chance that more history will be made this season and English sides will win all three European trophies. Watch this space.
