WEBSTER, N.Y. — Riley Lewis is making his mark at Webster Thomas High School, excelling on the track, in the classroom and with his cello.
Lewis started running track in 10th grade, previously he’d played lacrosse, but switched gears after a finger injury. The Thomas Titan quickly rose to compete at state and national levels. Lewis said he wishes he had started sooner but is proud of the progress he’s made.
“I’ve been grinding. I’ve been working, getting my way to sectionals and states throughout the years. And last year I got to states and nationals, and I’m looking to do the same this year,” Lewis said.
His coaches, Jim Brunswick and Georgia Tuttle, have watched his dedication pay off. Brunswick said Lewis sets a strong example for the team every day.
“He’s going to give his best and just get after it and yeah that’s infectious. You know those are the qualities you need to build and develop a program,” Brunswick said.
Tuttle said his passion is clear at every practice and competition.
“I mean, his dedication and passion can be seen every single day at practice, and every single day that he competes as well,” Tuttle said.
Lewis balances his athletic commitments with a demanding academic schedule. He took three AP exams this year, including one on Wednesday that made him late to practice.
“I’ve had three AP’s this year, which is my most and it’s been getting stressful, but it’s easy to be able to come out here and it relieves all my stress,” Lewis said.
In his free time, Lewis plays the cello in the Webster Thomas Philharmonic Orchestra. With just one month left as a Thomas Titan, he said he hopes to leave a strong example for younger runners.
“I’m really hoping to leave behind some good leadership for the younger kids. We’ve got a great group of sophomores. We have a small group of juniors, too, and I’m really hoping they’re looking really strong and they can go real far,” Lewis said.
His coaches said he’s already accomplished that goal. Lewis will run at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology while majoring in civil and environmental engineering after graduating.
