WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — Typically, NASCAR runs its race at Watkins Glenn International in August, but this year, they bumped it up to his weekend.
Mary LaFlair and her family have been coming to NASCAR weekend at Watkins Glen for more than 30 years.
“We are of course, hardcore NASCAR fans,” LaFlair said.
When asked if there was ever a thought that she wouldn’t go this year because it was in May, LaFlair said no. She said she’s been watching the forecast for the last week and when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade and make the best of it.
But it’s been no small task making that lemonade. The camping area is a muddy mess. Campers, trucks and even motor homes have been getting towed to higher ground after getting stuck in the muck.
“Our normal campsites, you know we have 13 sites total, our normal campsites are uninhabitable,” LaFlair said.
That would be a problem, except there’s still plenty of room in what’s normally a packed camping area.
LaFlair thinks some of it is people are nervous and they’re not coming because of the cold and the mud. She also thinks kids are in school, and when the race is in August the kids are still on summer vacation, so families are not going to pull their kids out of school to attend.
NASCAR says it shifted the date to ensure road courses are more evenly distributed throughout the racing season. Lewke spoke with driver Connor Zilisch about the date change and how he’s expecting it to change the actual racing.
“We’re race car drivers we have to be ready for any weather circumstances that come our way, just try to make the most of what you have no matter what the outside circumstances are,” Zilisch said. “I’m excited to go down there, it’s probably the coldest Watkins Glen race we’ve had in a long time, just given the fact that we’re racing in May but I think it’s a cool opportunity to go and try something new as a series and I’m looking forward to it.”
Fans are still likely to fill the stands, especially on Sunday, but they might be a little more chilly and muddy than normal. The racing starts Saturday with the ARCA and Truck races. Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race is at 4 p.m. The green flag drops on the Cup Series race at 3 p.m. Sunday.
