UNC will celebrate its Spring Commencement on campus this weekend, bringing thousands of graduates and their families to Chapel Hill. Here’s everything you need to know about the ceremonies:

Commencement Ceremony

The main UNC commencement ceremony will be held Saturday, May 9 at 7 p.m. in Kenan Stadium. Graduates are asked to arrive in the Loudermilk parking lot at 5:30 p.m. with their One Card. They will then enter the stadium through the tunnels and go straight to the seating area. Staff will be on hand to direct.

For families and guests, the Kenan Stadium gates will open at 6 p.m. Gates 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 will be open. Clear bags are required. For more information, consult the stadium’s Clear Bag Policy. Hydration stations will be available throughout the stadium, and guests are asked to bring their own refillable water bottles.

The keynote speaker at the ceremony will be country music star and 10-time Grammy nominee Eric Church.

“To be able to be there and celebrate the future, the students at the University of North Carolina as they go onto their next journey, I’m honored to do it,” Church said in the university’s announcement of his selection. “I can’t wait to see everybody there.”

For those who cannot attend in person, a live stream of the ceremony will be available on the UNC Commencement website and YouTube channel. A recording of the ceremony will remain on this website after the livestream’s conclusion.

In the case of severe weather, the ceremony will be delayed until it is deemed safe. Should the ceremony be postponed, it will take place at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 10. Updates will be posted on the commencement website and on university social media accounts.

Parking and Transit Options

Free public parking for students and guests is available in all non-reserved public parking locations. These include:

Bowles Lot Cardinal Deck Jackson Deck Manning Lot Williamson Lot Ambulatory Care Center Lot (ADA only) Bell Tower Deck (ADA only)

Public parking will NOT be available at Rams Head Deck, Dogwood Deck, Stadium Drive or Loudermilk Lot. Stadium Drive will have restricted access beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday.

Chapel Hill Transit will provide a free shuttle service from the Friday Center’s Park and Ride Lot to Gate 2 of Kenan Stadium. The service will operate continuously from 5 p.m. until approximately 45 minutes after the end of the ceremony, which UNC estimates will be 9:30 p.m.

Limos, rideshares and other passenger vehicles may drop off guests at the Health Sciences Library, located at 335 South Columbia Street.

Departmental Ceremonies

Smaller departmental ceremonies will take place on campus throughout the weekend. To find a specific ceremony’s location and time, consult the alphabetized list here. Parking information for departmental ceremonies can be found here. UNC recommends reaching out directly to specific schools and departments for more ceremony details.

The Graduate School’s Hooding Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m. in the Dean Smith Center. For more information on that ceremony, click here.

Other Campus Activities

Several UNC sports teams will be in action during the weekend. The baseball team is hosting a three-game series against Pittsburgh at Boshamer Stadium Friday through Sunday. Students and families using Ridge Road, which is the only way to get to Boshamer Stadium, should plan to accommodate for game traffic.

Elsewhere, both the UNC men’s and women’s lacrosse teams will be in NCAA Tournament action at Dorrance Field, located just to the northeast of Kenan Stadium across Stadium Drive. The men’s team plays Saturday at 12 p.m., while the women’s team plays Sunday at 12 p.m. The women’s tennis team will also be competing in the postseason at the Chewning Tennis Center, located near the Friday Center, Friday at 5 p.m.
