The United States women’s water polo team earned its most high-profile victory in two years by emerging atop the 2026 World Aquatics Division I Tournament. The Americans, along with the top six of eight finishers from the tournament, move on to the World Cup superfinal.
The USA, who last earned a major international win at the 2024 World Championships in Doha, played exceptionally well in Rotterdam. They were consistently good, and they put the cherry on top during its final match against Italy with a 13-3 win. They also posted impressive wins against the sport’s two heaviest hitters, the Netherlands and Spain, with 12-10 and 7-5 victories, respectively.
Team veteran Rachel Fattal was America’s biggest hero in the final game, netting four against the Italians. Overall, though, the tournament MVP went to American Ryann Neushul.
This outing marked an upswing for the Americans. After their 2024 World Title, they endured two respectable but disappointing losses in major bronze medal matches: first coming in 4th at the Olympic Games, then following it up with the same placing at the 2025 World Championships. The stars and stripes failed to qualify at all for the 2025 World Cup final. This year, though, they enter the final as one of the favorites. Sydney, Australia, will welcome those that advance from the Division I and II tournaments for the final from July 20-25.
Host country Netherlands also had a strong tournament to earn second in the final standings. 2025 World Champions Spain got third.
Last year, Greece notched its first ever World Cup victory and first World Championships title in two decades. Thus far, the Greek women have not met the same fortune in 2026. They finished 7th, capping off with a crushing 17-6 loss against Australia. Greek captain Eleftheria Plevritou out is out on an injury. The Aussies pushed their way into the final in its own nation.
