A local woman earned a $1 million Illinois Lottery prize after the scratch-off game she originally wanted to play was sold out.
The anonymous winner wanted to buy a specific $50 scratch-off ticket at a South Elgin Speedway in recent weeks, but her chosen game was sold out.
Instead, she pivoted to a $10 Million Bankroll ticket, and she is now the proud winner of a storybook prize.
“I originally wanted a different ticket, but it was out of stock,” she said. “So I picked the one next to it, since I’ve played it before.”
She said she didn’t wait long to scratch the ticket off, doing so in the parking lot of the gas station where she purchased it. A short time later, she realized she was staring at a ticket that had won her $1 million.
“It still hasn’t sunk in that I’ve won—and I don’t think it has for my husband either,” she said with a laugh.
The Speedway she purchased the ticket from at 1775 North Lafox Street will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket, according to Lottery officials.
As for the lucky winner, she said she has some big travel plans with the money, planning to visit Nintendo World in Florida and to potentially take a tropical cruise with her winnings.
