Diamondbacks’ Brandyn Garcia saw start of season in Triple-A as opportunity to get right ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

When it came to starting the season in Triple-A Reno, Arizona Diamondbacks lefty reliever Brandyn Garcia saw it as an opportunity to get right and become the pitcher he envisioned himself to be in 2026.

Garcia joined Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo Tuesday that starting in Reno this season allowed him to work on his command and improve on putting away hitters when ahead of the count.”

“The main goal was to get back to who I was last year and get back to who I will be this year,” Garcia said. “Just filling up the zone with every pitch, not just the sinker, but with everything, the new cutter, with the sweeper. Just getting ahead in the count and then when it’s time to finish it just strike someone out.”

After being traded to the Diamondbacks in a deal that sent first baseman Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners, Garcia made 12 appearances last season with Arizona, posting a 5.84 ERA with 13 strikeouts and registering a 1.54 WHIP.

Garcia struggled throughout spring training, posting an 11.37 ERA with 11 runs allowed (eight earned), seven strikeouts and registering a 1.89 WHIP. Garcia said he wasn’t surprised he was sent down to the minors to start the year, but that Triple-A was the best place for him to work on getting better.

“I knew it was the best way to go at it. If I can go down to Triple-A and figure some stuff out, it’s a lot easier to figure it out there than when you’re facing the best hitters in the world,” Garcia said.

Garcia did perform well in 10 appearances with the Aces, posting a 2.19 ERA across 12.1 innings with 18 strikeouts and registering a 1.70 WHIP. He was recalled by the D-backs on Friday and pitched two scoreless innings, striking out two, against the Chicago Cubs.

Garcia highlighted how important it was for him to have a scoreless outing in his first game back in the majors. He added that it will be equally as crucial for him to take it one game at a time and continue attacking the zone

“It felt really good, especially the first time back up,” Garcia said. “That’s a big momentum shift and a big confidence booster as well. I’m just looking to continue that, day by day, and have the same exact mentality I had in Reno, and … attack the zone.”
