Jack Kelly, among the newer members of Bob Bowman‘s training group at the University of Texas, recently won a pair of breaststroke events at the Fort Lauderdale Open in Florida. At that meet, he raced all three distances, including wins in both the 50 (27.42) and 100(1:00.72), and a runner-up finish to reigning Olympic gold medalist Leon Marchand in the 200 breast (2:12.46).

In an interview with World Aquatics, Kelly said that since his move to Texas, he’s found that training for all three races is still something heis working to figure out.

“It’s still something I’m trying to figure out, like my rates, I’m trying to get those down, but it’s really just kind of getting a mix of, a lot of power work for the 50 as well as just like that aerobic base that you need. ” Kelly said in the interview. “I’m getting plenty of that training with Bob, so it’s definitely different from the 50 to the 200… we’re covering all our bases.”

Kelly has impressed in his early time with the Texas Pro Group, notably winning the 200 breast at the US Open championships in December, swimming his first sub-2:10 long course 200 breast in 2:09.90. At those same championships, he swam career bests in the 50 breast (27.26) and 100 breast (59.72).

When asked what he consider his best, he narrowed it down to both the 100 and 200, ultimately siding with the latter, dating back to his college days at Brown, though he won consecutive 100 breast Ivy League titles in the 100 in 2024 and 2025, but finished top three in the 200 breast each of his years at Ivies in the 200 breast, including three straight runner up finishes from his sophomore to his senior season.

“I’d probably go with the 200, I was just more comfortable with that short course, and it was my better event,” Kelly said. “Funny enough, [during] my senior year, I kind of figured out the 10 a little bit, and it got close to my 200… but if I had to pick between the two, I’d say the 200.”

Kelly also added that the 50 breaststroke event at the Olympics has shifted his focus, and he is now aiming to potentially compete for a spot on an Olympic team in 2028.

“The past couple of weeks, especially at Irish Champs, I’ve seen a little bit of a breakthrough in that event,” Kelly said. “So I’d love to throw my name in the hat.”

Kelly recently competed at the Irish Open Championships, where he won all three breaststroke races in 26.84, 59.90, and 2:12.55. His 50 breast not only marked a new lifetime best but also broke the Irish national record.

He recently announced that he would represent Ireland internationally, and though he did not swim his best times in the 100 breast and 200 breast at the Irish Open, his best times are both faster than the existing Irish national records.

This season, Kelly ranks 8th in the world in the 50 breast, 19th in the 100 breast, and 14th in the 200 breast.
