ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Dredging is underway in Lake Ontario at Rochester’s Harbor and will continue through July.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) shared photos of the start of its bi-annual operation where the Genesee River empties into Lake Ontario. The Corps awarded nearly $2 million to a Michigan company to dig out about 250,000 cubic yards of sand and soil.
Dredging of the harbor is done every two years by USACE. It is done based on need and available funding. The harbor was last dredged in 2024. The USACE says about 80,000 cubic yards of sediment was removed.
The Corps says this is necessary to keep the harbor open and supportive of several million dollars in business for the region.
