Here's How I Eat Gluten-Free at Disney World and Miss Nothing ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Disney takes food allergies and intolerances very seriously, so much so that most eateries have dedicated allergy menus to accommodate people who need to be careful of certain ingredients. These menus cover common allergies to items like gluten, wheat, egg, shellfish, peanut, tree nut, soy and sesame. I’ve also noticed that Disney is incredibly accommodating, making special gluten-free meals as well. You want gluten-free mickey waffles? Disney will make them for you. Craving a pasta dish? Disney will be happy to make your dish of choice gluten-free.

Use The Disney World App For Quick Service Restaurants

The Disney World app is an incredible tool for so many things, and one of those things is ordering food from quick service restaurants directly on the app. Whether you’re in a park or visiting one of Disney’s resorts, this can be an option for you. All you need to do is open the app, click on the quick service restaurant you’re wanting to go to, and hit “order food”.

The Disney World App is incredibly easy to use.

The top of the menu will allow you to click on a variety of categories like drinks, sides and entrees. If you keep scrolling through those icons, the last one will be “Allergy-Friendly”. Once you click that, you will be able to filter for a gluten/wheat allergy-friendly menu. One of the best parts about this is that you’re not forced to just choose from meals that are already naturally gluten-free. You won’t be stuck just eating a plate of grilled chicken and lettuce or a bun-less cheeseburger. Instead, these menus offer most food items in a completely gluten-free version.

When ordering, you have to choose a window of time to pick up your order. I recommend doing this early, because the staff does take extra time when preparing an allergy safe meal. Once you hit your window of time, you have to go back in the app and click “I’m here, prepare my order”. Anything made allergy-friendly will be served on a purple tray, and will also have a toothpick with a purple top. This indicates that your meal is gluten-free.

Ask The Wait Staff For An Allergy Menu or Guide At Sit-Down Restaurants

When it comes to sit-down restaurants at Disney World or Disneyland, the offerings are very similar to those of the quick-service restaurants. Many meals can be made gluten-free (like pastas or buns for a burger). My number one tip is to tell your waiter right as you get seated that you cannot eat gluten. From there, they will let you know how that specific restaurant handles the allergy.

Another spot that my family dined at was Ohana, which is located in the Polynesian Resort. We went for brunch, which is served family-style. At this restaurant, I was given my own platter of gluten-free food, that way I didn’t have to deal with cross-contamination from my family picking things up from the different dishes on the table. I was given a gluten-free donut, gluten-free Mickey waffles, sausage, eggs, potato pancakes, and potato wedges.

For a-la-carte restaurants, like Cinderella’s Royal Table, I was given a separate allergy menu. There, you would look at each dish and read the allergy list underneath it. For example, I ordered the roasted lamb chops, and underneath it said “For gluten/wheat, egg, fish/shellfish, peanut/tree nut, sesame, soy allergies”. This is how I knew it was safe for me to eat. One of the biggest standouts at this restaurant was the cheesecake, which was able to be made gluten-free. It was in the shape of a block of cheese, with an adorable piece of chocolate that had an image of Cinderella’s little mice on the front. The flavor of the cheesecake and the gluten-free crumbles sprinkled around was absolutely perfect.

The most adorable and tasty gluten-free cheesecake I've ever had.

My Go-To Disney World Gluten-Free "Bonus" Tips

Visit the Gluten-Free Holy Grail: If you find yourself at Disney Springs, you absolutely have to stop by Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC. The entire facility is 100% gluten-free, vegan and soy-free. Being able to walk into a bakery and order anything in the glass case without asking a single question is a rare, beautiful feeling! The DOLE Whip is Your Best Friend: One of the most iconic Disney snacks—the DOLE Whip—is naturally gluten-free (and vegan!). It’s the perfect, safe treat to grab when everyone else is eyeing the churro carts.Check the Toppers: When you order a gluten-free burger or sandwich, sometimes the bun can be a bit dry. Most quick-service spots have a toppings bar where you can grab fresh lettuce, tomatoes and pickles to dress it up. Just be mindful of cross-contamination at the shared station, or ask a Cast Member for fresh toppings from the back!Look for the "Snack Binder": If you’re at a small outdoor kiosk or popcorn stand and aren't sure about the ingredients, ask to see their Allergy Reference Guide. It’s a binder that lists every single ingredient in their snacks, so you can double-check before you buy.Resort Quick-Service Staples: If you’re staying on-property, your resort’s food court usually has a dedicated gluten-free toaster and carries brands like Enjoy Life or Omis. I always grab a few pre-packaged cookies or brownies to keep in my park bag for those moments when I need a quick snack between lightning lanes.Don't miss the Allergy-Friendly Beignets at Port Orleans Resort—French Quarter, which are both gluten-free and vegan—and life-changing, in my humble opinion.

With these tips in your back pocket, you can stop focusing on the labels and start focusing on the memories. Happy eating!
