Tourism minister inaugurates solar power station at GEM ...Egypt

News by : (EGYPT INDEPENDENT) -

Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy affirmed that the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is leading efforts in all areas related to the environment, clean energy, and reducing carbon emissions.

This came during the minister’s inauguration on Monday, April 4, 2026, of a solar power station at the museum, in a new step toward transforming it into a global green museum. This move further enhances the museum’s status as an environmentally friendly international institution.

In his speech, the tourism minister praised the cooperation between Egypt, Japan, and the United Nations Development Program in completing this project.

He noted that six museums are already powered by renewable energy, adding that work is currently underway to expand the experience to other museums. He also pointed out that 50 percent of hotels have adopted sound environmental policies.

For his part, Ahmed Ghoneim, CEO of the Grand Egyptian Museum Authority, emphasized that the inauguration of the solar power station is a step toward the museum’s global leadership.

He said the station is not merely a technical project but a clear declaration of a strategic shift adopted by the state, aimed at balancing the preservation of cultural and civilizational heritage with energy conservation and environmental protection.

He added that it is a fruitful project integrating local and international efforts in cooperation with global partners, noting that it represents a comprehensive vision and a model to be emulated in sustainability.

He explained that solar panels have been installed on the museum’s side fences, and building-integrated photovoltaic technology has been applied at the Khufu Boats building.

He stated “It is a technical project with a direct impact, providing 12 percent of the museum’s energy consumption. We have also expanded by establishing an additional station, bringing the total capacity to 1 megawatt, covering 25 percent of the museum’s energy consumption and reducing its carbon footprint.”

He pointed out that cultural institutions have become partners in achieving sustainable development goals and preserving the environment and energy resources in Egypt.
