As travelers prepare for their summer trips, it’s not just automobile drivers that are feeling the pain at the pump, because airfares are also surging.
Costs on air travel are up 14.9% over the past year, according to NerdWallet’s Travel Price Index, leading some to put their travel plans on hold or to make dramatic changes to what they intend to do.
“I will take a pause because price matters. I am a teacher,” said Ashley Newkirk.
There are some options travelers can take advantage of, says Lynn Farrell, the owner of Windy City Travel. She says there are still some good travel deals available right now, and a travel advisor can help you find them.
“A lot of vacation packages have negotiated flights,” said Farrell. “There’s still space on some of these packages. But Summer travel is huge.So you have to get on it. You have to start looking and booking now.”
Farrell also shared tips on how to still take that summer getaway or for those already planning for the fall. She says to book now, plan ahead and use reward points if you have them. She also says that you don’t always find the cheapest flights on Tuesday nights, a common misconception.
“Yes, there are algorithms to the airlines,” she said. “Tuesday night may not necessarily be what that is. What I can tell you is the airlines understand the buying patterns of consumers, that you start looking on Monday, and you look again on Tuesday and Wednesday, and then by Thursday, fares are going up. ‘Oh my gosh, do I buy, do buy? On Friday, they’re a little higher.’ You get a little spooked. There’s only one seat left, right? Maybe not true. So, travel advisors, we know when those rates, and we have a system that allows us to see when those rates reset.”
Farrell also recommends purchasing travel insurance.
“We insure our car, our health, our house. Never hurts to insure our travel money as well. Because things happen,” Farrell said.
