UTICA, N.Y. — A former guard at Mid-State Correctional Facility took a last-minute plea deal Monday before his murder trial connected to an inmate’s death.
News10NBC’s affiliate in Syracuse reports that Caleb Blair pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the first degree. He faces 11 years in prison when he’s sentenced next month.
Blair is one of ten former guards charged in the deadly beating of Messiah Nantwi back in March 2025. Nine of them, including Blair, have been convicted or taken pleas.
Last month, another former guard, Jonah Levi, was convicted of manslaughter, two counts of gang assault, conspiracy, and offering a false instrument for filing for Nantwi’s death. He was acquitted on his murder charge.

Nantwi’s death came months after the beating death of Robert Brooks, a Greece man incarcerated at Marcy Correctional Facility, which is across the street from Mid-State.
