Does the Chicago area have a doctor shortage? NBC 5 Responds survey results point to yes ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

How difficult — or easy — is it to get a doctor appointment with the provider you want in the Chicago area? The results of an NBC 5 Responds survey show it could take months, and a possible doctor shortage could make things even more challenging.

More than 1,100 people across the Chicago area took NBC 5 Responds’ recent non-scientific survey on ease of doctor appointments. While some chose to remain anonymous, others spoke candidly with NBC Chicago about their struggles to get medical help.

Anita Mark, of Edgewater, was among the patients NBC 5 Responds spoke to waiting months for care. She says she’s been dealing with a debilitating, mysterious condition for the past year.

“I had dizzy spells every day that lasted two to four hours,” Mark told NBC 5 Responds. “And I couldn’t work, I couldn’t leave the house. According to Mark, the condition strikes without warning and happen almost daily.

Mark said getting in to see a neurologist has seemed almost impossible—leaving her waiting until March of 2027 for an appointment with the provider of her choice.

As she dealt with the deficit of doctor appointments, Mark came across NBC 5 Responds’ doctor appointment survey.

“I couldn’t believe it because, you know, here this is something I have been griping about to anyone who would listen for months and I didn’t think anyone really thought it was a problem,” Mark recalled.

Survey results point to a doctor deficit

NBC 5 Respond’s survey results suggest many are experiencing similar problems. Of the 1,178 people who took our survey, 67% said they struggled to schedule an appointment with their primary doctor in the past year due to the doctor’s lack of availability.

76% of survey respondents said they struggled to schedule an appointment with a specialty doctor due to the doctor’s lack of availability.

Of the respondents who struggled to book an in-person appointment, 45% said they booked an appointment later than they wanted. 14% found another provider, and 5% went to an emergency room.

14 % skipped treatment altogether, the results showed.

Mark is still committed to seeing the doctor she was referred to. For now, she’s on a waiting list to get in sooner than her May 2027 appointment.
