The Mumbai Indians (MI) have won the toss and opted to bowl first against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 47th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Suryakumar Kumar came for the toss instead of Hardik Pandya and revealed that the captain was sick for the game. Both teams made 3 changes for the game.
Why did MI choose to bowl?
Suryakumar stated that he expects humid conditions for the game, and the main reason behind chasing is that we’ve seen batting becoming easier in the second innings due to dew setting in. He also revealed that Hardik and Trent Boult go out while Rohit Sharma returns to the team.
“We will look to bowl first. (The pitch) Looks good. A little humid tonight. In the second innings, we saw (last game), it became better. He (Hardik) is not well tonight, so I’m stepping into his shoes. Corbin comes in for Boult; Rohit is back. You can’t run away from the fact that MI is not known for this position. Put your hands up, and play your best game. Can’t say it will make us dangerous; we have five games left and try to win them,” Suryakumar said after winning the toss.
Pant stated that had he won the toss, he would’ve batted second as well. He stated that Josh Inglis will make his LSG debut as Mukul Choudhary goes out of the team, and Akshat Raghuwanshi will make his IPL debut.
“We would have done the same. It is a good wicket to bat on, and you can chase any target. A lot of reflection. It has been a tough season for us; there’s no running away from that. Everyone knows how passionate he (Sanjeev Goenka) is about the game and his team; hopefully, we can do it for the owner and our fans. Records help, but when you are clearing your mindset, everything comes together. Inglis comes in, Mukul goes out, and Raghuwanshi comes in, bowling we will decide later,” Pant told Deep Dasgupta.

Impact Subs:Wankhede Stadium Pitch Report
It’s expected to be a typical Wankhede pitch for the MI vs LSG match. There will be a little help for the fast bowlers in the first two overs, as there’s a little bit of grass left on the surface. The bounce, which is a key feature in Mumbai, will help the pacers with the new ball. There’s a bit of moisture as well, and finger spinners, like Allah Ghazanfar, will be useful in the powerplay. Post that, it’ll become a beautiful batting track.
Record after winning the toss at Wankhede Stadium in IPL
128 matches have been played at the venue in the IPL. There’s a slight advantage for teams winning the toss at the venue. 66 of 128 matches, 51.56%, have been won by them. Batting second has been more fruitful: chasing teams have won 69 matches, 53.91%, at the Wankhede Stadium in the IPL.
MI vs LSG: Who has the advantage
MI haven’t been winning at home in IPL 2026. They’ve lost 4 matches on the trot at the Wankhede Stadium. But the defeats have come against great batting units. LSG isn’t one. Their top four are out of form. Lucknow’s bowling is great, but Wankhede is one of the flattest surfaces in the league. That nullifies their advantage. All in all, Mumbai’s superior batting has them ahead.
