After closing in 2021 for renovations and initially being scheduled to reopen in 2022, the North Sydney Pool, home to 86 world record-breaking performances, is finally set to reopen this year.
In a report from 7 News Sydney, the North Sydney Pool was previewed at an event hosted by former Australian Olympian Michael Klim and the Klim Foundation, which raises awareness for Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP), an autoimmune disease that Klim was diagnosed with in 2022, leaving him unable to continue walking unassisted.
The event was attended by fellow Australian Olympians Ian Thorpe, Daniel Kowalski, and Kieran Perkins as support for Klim’s new “Championing Life Initiative”.
“It’s got to be one of the best spots in the country, you can’t beat the view,” said Perkins to 7 News.
“I think it will be worth the wait for everyone who comes to swim,” said North Sydney Mayor Zoe Baker in a report from 7 News.
The newly renovated facility features two indoor pools, a spa, a sauna, a Pilates room, and a gelato bar.

The pool first opened in 1936 and was originally set as a two-year, $64 million project at the time of its 2021 closing, but was later rescheduled to a five-year build, totaling $122 million, and is now set to open this year.
Baker even stated that she voted against the build 23 times, citing that the project had limited “preplanning or proper budget,” and says that she shares the same frustration as others in the area about the expensive build.
In an article from The Guardian, Baker stated that the council will “still be dealing with the financial and other legacies of the pool,” but added that for those who use the facilities, it would be “a joy”.
Part of the delay had to do with the pipes, which pull water from the nearby harbor to fill the pools and heat the outdoor water.
“There were too many turns in the pipes so they had to redo it to make certain that it pumped at the right volume,” Baker said.
Baker told The Guardian that the builders on site will formally hand back the project in two to three weeks, followed by an eight to ten-week period to prepare for public use.
One of the new features is a hinged wall in the middle of the 50-meter pool, doubling the number of lanes from 8 to 16. However, the overall design of the facility pays homage to the original 1930s build, including painting the pool’s outer rim a terracotta color to match the surviving brick around the facility.
