Norris: Miami qualifying reflects where McLaren ‘deserve to be’ ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Lando Norris believes McLaren’s drop in performance during Miami Grand Prix qualifying paints a more accurate picture of the team’s competitive standing, despite a dominant showing in the Sprint event earlier in the day.

The British driver had appeared to put McLaren in a commanding position after securing Sprint pole and converting it into victory, with teammate Oscar Piastri completing a one-two finish for the team.

However, the competitive order shifted noticeably in qualifying for Sunday’s main race.

Norris could only manage fourth on the grid, nearly four tenths adrift of polesitter Kimi Antonelli, while Piastri slipped further back to seventh.

Rivals ‘corrected’ their performance

Rather than viewing McLaren’s drop as a sudden loss of pace, Norris suggested it was instead a case of competitors delivering a truer representation of their capabilities after underperforming earlier.

“I think we still did a good job, I think others just did a really bad job yesterday and just did the job they should do today, honestly, so not too many complaints,” Norris said.

He pointed to changing conditions as a contributing factor but stopped short of blaming them for the shift in order.

“It was certainly a bit trickier with the car today with the wind and the temperatures,” Norris explained.

“Maybe the car just wasn't working quite as well and I certainly struggled a little bit more for whatever reason, but not because we changed anything.

“It's just the conditions were a little bit different and the others just did a job that they should do and I think we are where we deserve to be honestly.”

Piastri echoed that assessment, suggesting McLaren’s rivals had simply maximised their potential when it mattered most.

“I think everyone else maximised what they had a lot more,” he said.

“For us it was a big surprise to not see Mercedes be quick yesterday and this morning, and seeing Kimi on pole by that much is more what we expected. And I think even for Max and Charles, I think they probably just maximised a bit more of what they have - and that's a bit more of real picture.”

Fine margins exposed

The lap times underline the shift. Norris’ Sprint pole effort of 1m27.869s dropped to a 1m28.183s best in qualifying, while Piastri experienced a similar decline from 1m28.108s to 1m28.500s.

For Norris, the contrast highlights both McLaren’s strong execution earlier in the weekend and the narrow margins separating the front-runners.

“I don't think people gave us good credit for how good of a job we did yesterday comparing to the others, they were clearly quicker and that's why I was very, very happy with yesterday's performance and this morning's performance,” Norris explained.

“We maximised everything and I said yesterday already that it was close between the Mercedes.”

He also pointed to underlying pace from key rivals that had not been fully evident during the Sprint sessions.

“Mercedes around every corner was pretty much just as quick as or quicker than us and they just had some issues and clearly Max and the Red Bull was also very strong as well.”

Despite McLaren’s lower grid positions for the Grand Prix, Norris insisted the outcome was not entirely unexpected.

“So I'm not surprised, as a team we're surprised, probably surprised we struggled as much as we did today but I don't think in terms of order and pace of the Mercedes we're surprised at all,” he concluded.

With the grid now reset to what Norris views as a more accurate competitive order, McLaren faces a tougher challenge to replicate its Sprint success when it matters most on Sunday.
