BRIGHTON, N.Y. — Former Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir led a skating clinic in Brighton on Saturday.
Weir has a figure skating academy in Pennsylvania and was invited to help the Genesee Figure Skating Club learn some new tricks at Tim Hortons Ice Plex. He said when he was growing up, he had access to high-level skaters at training centers in the U.S., so it’s a mission of his to visit as many people as he can.
“Because I’ve seen a lot in the world of figure skating, good, bad, ugly, I’ve learned a lot on the ice, and to bring my experience to young people is a true gift, and I enjoy it so much I couldn’t stay away,” Weir said.
Weir’s coaching partner broke out a backflip on the ice and made sure he found the camera after. He and his coaching partner opened their academy almost three years ago.
Weir said coaching clinics like these open skaters’ minds to different ideas and approaches.
