His story, about a billionaire who learns the art of fighting to avenge his parents’ deaths, restored the grittier vision, but elevated Bruce Wayne's narrative with character, realism, and emotional depth. The director, whose resume at the time included Following, Memento, and Insomnia, was impressive, but he hadn’t dipped into blockbuster territory just yet. He had a steep climb ahead, but if anyone could pull it off, it was Nolan.
“He said to the studio, ‘Why would I want to direct an action film where I hire another director to direct the action?’” director of photography Wally Pfister recalls in an interview with Empire. “It seemed insane, but it made all the sense in the world to me!”
