UEFA Women’s Champions League 2025-26: The Opta Supercomputer’s Semi-Final Second-Leg Predictions ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

How does the Opta supercomputer predict the semi-final second-leg matches in the UEFA Women’s Champions League this weekend will play out?

Both UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-finals are finely poised after the first legs, as the four remaining participants prepare to battle it out in the second legs this weekend for a place in the final in Oslo on 23 May.

Defending champions Arsenal take a one-goal lead to France when they face OL Lyonnes again after an impressive 2-1 comeback victory at the Emirates Stadium last week, while Bayern Munich and Barcelona played out a 1-1 draw in the other semi.

Here, we preview both second legs, including which teams the Opta supercomputer forecasts will make it through.

OL Lyonnes vs Arsenal (1-2 agg)

Saturday 2 May (15:00 CET kick-off)

It was all going so well for Lyonnes, with Jule Brand putting them ahead last Sunday in north London.

However, an own goal from Ingrid Engen levelled things up. It was a fortunate way for Arsenal to get back into the game, but Olivia Smith’s winner was less lucky. The former Liverpool forward took advantage of a slack pass from the visitors and finished calmly to give Renée Slegers’ side a lead to take to France.

And Arsenal will be confident of completing the job. They’ve won their last two Women’s Champions League away games against OL Lyonnes, 5-1 in the 2022-23 group stage and 4-1 in last season’s semi-final second leg. Those games are the French side’s two biggest losses in the competition.

Lyonnes struggled against Arsenal again last week, recording their lowest totals in a UEFA Women’s Champions League game this season for xG (0.44), shots (6), shots on target (1), touches in the opposition box (16) and possession (50%).

They will be eager to get back to winning ways at Groupama Stadium, needing a victory to have a chance of advancing. Lyonnes have lost two of their last three Women’s Champions League games (W1), as many as they suffered in their previous 28 games combined (W23 D3 L2).

They are very strong at home, though, having won 10 of their last 11, but it must be noted that the other game in this run was the 4-1 defeat to Arsenal last season.

The fact that Arsenal are the defending champions bodes well historically. The last time the reigning holders were knocked out in the semis of the competition was in 2015-16 (Eintracht Frankfurt). The seven defending champions to have reached the last four since have all advanced to the final.

Should Lyonnes turn things around and go through, Jonatan Giráldez will become just the third manager to lead two different teams (also Barcelona) to the UEFA Women’s Champions League final after Farid Benstiti and Patrice Lair, who both did so with Lyonnes and Paris Saint-Germain.

But what does the Opta supercomputer project? Well, it could be an interesting second leg indeed, as Lyonnes are favourites to win (47.2%). That would, of course, be the only scenario in which they could go through, as a draw (26.2%) or Arsenal win (26.6%) would send the WSL side to the final again, making them the first English team to reach consecutive UWCL finals.

Barcelona vs Bayern Munich (1-1 agg)

Sunday 3 May (16:30 CET kick-off)

When Ewa Pajor put Barcelona ahead early in Munich last Saturday, some may have feared it would be like their one-sided meeting earlier in the competition when the Spanish side won 7-1.

Bayern fought back, though, equalising through Franziska Kett, who was also sent off 10 minutes later, but the hosts held on for a draw.

It was a strong effort from the Germans, but they will have their work cut out in the second leg at Camp Nou. Barça have won 32 of their last 34 home matches in the competition (D1 L1), including the last nine in a row by an aggregate score of 48-4.

Despite the aggregate score being level, Barcelona are big favourites to advance, having reached the final in each of the last five seasons. However, Bayern can perhaps take some inspiration from the fact that the last team to eliminate Barça at the semi-final stage was another German side in Wolfsburg in 2019-20, though that was over just a single game.

The visitors will have to keep a close eye on Alexia Putellas, who has recorded at least one goal involvement in each of her last seven home Champions League appearances (5 goals, 8 assists). This season in the competition, Putellas ranks first for goals and assists combined at home (4 goals, 5 assists) and is top for chances created on home soil (21). She also scored one and assisted two in the 7-1 win over Bayern in October.

Bayern have their own dangerous players, though. Pernille Harder is third in the UWCL for goal involvements this season (9 – 7 goals, 2 assists). Only Vivianne Miedema (8 goals in 2016-17) has scored more for Bayern in a single Champions League campaign.

The Opta supercomputer makes Barcelona heavy favourites for this one. Pere Romeu’s side won a whopping 63% of pre-match simulations. Bayern were successful in 17.4%, while a draw that would take the tie to extra-time and possibly penalties occurred in the remaining 19.6%.
